Much of what you post is correct, but he does still have "influence" just by sitting there with that sour face.I don't believe this. I think he is well and truly gone from having any real influence, and he doesn't want to, because every morsel of suffering they've gone through since his departure only cements (in his mind) how great he was. I know this is perverse -- but that's how autocratic megalomaniacs think. I've always thought Utd was always merely the instrument of his own self-aggrandizement, because the ownership group was stupid and nut-less enough to give him free reign after a period of success. Trouble is, autocratic megalomaniacs don't plan for succession because they don't care about it. The organization is a means to an end. The "United way" was always a sham -- it was Ferguson's way or the highway, and he's gone, so they've only the highway -- and they've been run over by better run clubs while they founder about. It's fucking delicious.
He knew exactly when the time was right to leave, the end of the season that we should have kicked on from winning the league but failed (how we f**ked that season so badly, only mancini will know).
He knew that season was a bonus for him, almost single handedly van persie got him that title, but he knew it was over, it wouldn't happen again, and better still he was happy to leave them f**ked. Since then he's glowered in the background, and he will next year too, because he doesn't want anyone to be even close to emulating him, and that's the best bit, he f**ked them, and he'll be happy sitting there knowing that nobody will ever reach his heights again.
