I seem to remember this figure of 659 million fans was concocted by the Utd PR department ahead of the "flotation for fools" a while back. It was not universally accepted.

The scribblers at the Financial Times have a least one virtue, they tell the truth to their class, they openly scoffed at the figure, stating at best it was half that number, though still an impressive figure nonetheless.

As time has gone by the hacks have carved this number in to stone and reel it out whenever their editors demand yet more Utd spin tosh.

And yet one of their stands will not be open for their upcoming Europa league game

The figure was originally about recognition of brand IIRC, it got transmuted into 'fans' for media/PR purposes. Plus it's an example of flawed extrapolation of figures - the sample was a few 1000's and that got ramped up to the world population.

How anyone can believe it , is laughable, giving
it also hasn't changed in , what, 5 years?, it's also trotted out in their annual report, yearly.
To my mind, It would be an issue if your fan base is publicised as being so static for so many years, but apparently not.

You remember some exec or other commenting that they needed to keep an eye on bias at the time of the grovelling Rooney/Ferguson/Salford docs, and the Salford cup ties?
When he said it, I thought it could be read both ways. Clearly he meant that the levels must be maintained.

I don't know if this should go into an existing bbc thread or united thread so I just started a new one.

Anyways, on the bbc website now there is a headline that reads 'Are United about to rule the world?' I mean really? Why do the bbc lick their arse so much? Endless programmes about the 'class of 92', the whole Pep to United thing. The bbc were reporting that he could join united and when it came out he was comin to City, they said it was 'the worst kept secret'???

'659 million fans. 116 million social media followers'... Some stats they used to show just how big united are, BORE OFF!!! Why show the social media followers anyway when you've said how many they have worldwide? haha

Basically what im asking here is, why do the bbc love them so much? And will united rule the world? haha

It's yet another ridiculous headline that has nothing to do with the story within. If it was about City, it would have been "money bags City have plans to ruin the world".

Fortunately this kind of story, and the CL plans to protect the "elite" are being ridiculed by many which is a great thing.

Leicester's brilliant season and Tottenham being in the top four certainly helps. It means that the voice of the usually unheard is out there. The CL is about the best clubs in Europe competing. That changes from season to season. It would be stale, corrupt and boring for that to change so AC Milan, Liverpool and the rags, teams with past successes but teams that are very far away from any sort of domination.

The rags might have the most fans or the most revenue. They also have huge debt, an academy that is getting repeatedly screwed over and in next to no time City have gone from fighting off relegation to being the noisy neighbours to being the best club in the North West, with the best and most attractive academy and soon to have the most sought after manager. What do the rags have? A Mourinho who has lost most of, if not all of the respect he once had from the media here? A shite squad with old legs and young no hopers.

The delusion of the united fans is fuelled by the crap the media come out with, the whole 'romanticism' I keep hearing about in regards to united is both pathetic and false. I read redcafe a lot for a laugh and on there they are so blinkered. One united fan was saying how pep will be a flop, then went on to list each individual player we have and said why they are crap. They all live in a red bubble and cant see anything beyond that. They'll still be calling themselves the biggest club in the world when they are in league 1 lol

That's exactly what I'm saying. I have to make assumptions as their business affairs are hidden behind walls of secrecy in Delaware and the Cayman Islands but Andy Green, a united fan who blogs as Andersred, did a great series of blogs on their malls business about 5 years ago and there were publicly available records about the charges over those properties that he had access to.

The debt on the rags' books appears to have been secured on the club's assets, according to the bond and flotation documents. What their other business and any personal debts are secured against can only be speculated on but they can't use the Tampa Bay Buccaneers so united shares are the only assets they appear to have.

Rollback - For a supposed City fan, most of your posts are on this thread and you've been very active in defending the Glazers. Anything you'd like to tell us?
