It's the same as united fans who talk about their game with Liverpool having 'always' been their biggest game. It could only make any meaningful claim to such a title since the mid-1970's, which means it covers less than a third of each club's....errr....history.
Dead right, the Rag/Dipper so-called rivalry would be a mystery to football supporters pre 1974, this bollox is
a recent confection, but try telling that to some 45 year old, or younger, they just won't have it.
(apologies if you're a mere stripling Gord!)

I’ve always thought it was the pisscan, who started it, as the rags closed in on Liverpool's record number of titles.

I've posted before that I reckon the 1977 FA Cup Final was the catalyst for the intensity of that rivalry. It got really tasty that day. I think our relegation in 1983 and subsequent decline, along with Liverpool, then united's dominance for the next three decades accentuated and cemented the game between those two as the main fixture for both those clubs (and more generally tbf). For reasons of expediency it may still occupy that place in the minds of many united and Liverpool fans, but not, I suspect, for most united fans from Manchester.

The intensity of the rivalry pre-dated 1986. It was a huge fixture before then.

There were lots of reasons for Ferguson bigging up that fixture. Belittling City was one of the less obvious/important ones, but nonetheless it would have been in his mind, especially after the 5-1.

@Prestwich_Blue I noticed their “pep is a hypocrite” thread on the caf. Going on and on about dirty oil money and human rights abuses in the UAE and so on. I also noticed you made reference to some of their official banking partners.
I noticed that

1) Emirates NBD which is (as far as I can see) 56% owned by the Dubai goverment

And

2) Commerical bank of Qatar. Which when you see the board of directors reads like this

Sheikh Abdulla Bin Ali Bin Jabor Al Thani - Chairman

2. Mr. Hussain Ibrahim Al Fardan – Vice Chairman

3. Mr. Omar Hussain Ibrahim Al Fardan – Managing Director

4. HE. Mr. Abdulrahman Bin Hamad Al Attiyah - Member

5. Sheikh Jabor Bin Ali Bin Jabor Al Thani - Member

6. Sheikh Faisal Bin Fahad Bin Jassim Al Thani - Member

7. Mr. Mohamad Ismail Mandani Al Emadi - Member

8. Qatar Insurance Company - Represented by: Mr. Ali Saleh Al Fadala - Member

9. Mr. Saleh Abdulla Mohamed Al Ibrahim Al Mannai – Member

Now I haven’t time to go through each one but the fact their are a few Sheikhs make their fans stance rather bemusing. Do they realise they take money from the ruling family of Qatar ? Or are they just that fucking stupid they know absolutely fuck all about their own club ? I feel this needs more research so the next time some cocky rag shit face no nout plonk mentions our ties to the UAE

Edit

Media partners

Saudi telecoms company which is 70% owned by........... Public investment fund (PIF)

Public Investment Fund (PIF) is a sovereign wealth fund owned by Saudi Arabia, founded for the purpose of investing funds on behalf of the Government of the Saudi Arabia.

Ashley Young says that the Scum never talk about City in an interview where he talks about City. :-)

What did Rat face sing when they won the Europa League? ...a song about us. Small time.

They are completely obsessed with us.

Spot on,where as we don’t consider them a viable threat at the moment,of course we as fans like talking about them on the odd occasion but that’s more to do with laughing at the fuckers when they spout shite or when their hoof ball team loses, all for laughs ...

From redcafe

"I have no idea why Man City was chosen by it's current owners. There were far better options, like Newcastle as someone others have said. At least then, there would be actual fans at the games instead of the swathes of empty seats.
They could have just as easily stuck a pin in the map and picked the nearest ‘attainable’ club.
What really gets my goat about the City fans that I know, is the fact there is absolutely no humility about what has happened. They act like they actually deserve their success.
It is basically the same as a cheat mode in a football manager game. You might well go and win everything in sight, but inside, you have that empty feeling that it isn’t real and everybody else knows it.
In years to come, I wouldn’t be surprised if massive under the table payments to players and agents from City became known. Mercenaries, every single one of them".
