The whole debate about buying the league isn't really a search for truth. It's a search for the Holy Grail of Sport -- the Holy Grail being a way to permanently slag off a competitor regardless of their results.
If your rival spends a lot of money, then it "should" win the league. So if it does, well, it should have. So it's not an accomplishment. Might as well be Celtic.
If a rival spends a lot and DOESN'T win, well, that's even a better thing to rile their fans up about.
So you can't lose no matter what -- or, rather, your competitor can't win. Which means you've emotionally insulated yourself from the fear of losing, or of a competitor winning. Which means as a fan of sport, you're risking nothing -- no emotion at all.
And if you're risking nothing emotional at all, you aren't a fan of sport. You're just a pussy.
