Their first choice back four of Wan-Bissaka, Lindelof, Maguire and Shaw cost pocket change less than £200 million. But they're not ruining football. Except as a spectacle.

and the back-up back 4 of Dalot, Bailly, Rojo and Young is another £81m with Jones being another £17m, so pretty much £300m on 9 defenders.

spent £150m in summer and worse than they were, which was already bad. The best thing is some of their fans actually do think that Ole is the one to save them. I was in a taxi last night and the driver was saying how Ole needs 5 years and how Fred is going to become a great player. Brilliant!!

Had he mastered going round corners?

I watched most of the match on BT and was listening to Rio Ferdinands post match analysis. He said the rags had been playing well for the last three or four games but they just couldn't get going today for some reason, which he could quite explain. He implied this result was just a blip, possibly a result of tiredness with the recent heavy schedule. Hopefully soon back to winning ways he suggested.

Firstly, I thought, that's bollocks, surely, because I don't remember them playing well for the last four games. You account above seems much more accurate. And secondly I thought just what is the point in Rio ferdinand talking such bollocks. Why? Nobody believes it. Is it a case of let's pretend the rags are still great? Talk about them challenging for top four but ignore the results and show them last on MOTD so hopefully nobody notices they are actually crap.
This. It’s what sells shirts and season tickets, makes myths and legends and causes the death of national teams by flooding them with over-hyped mediocrity.

He can’t stop doing it because it’s part of their culture, in their DNA - a set of values that he both bought into and was probably brought in to reinforce and contribute to.

The united way.
