I wouldn’t worry too much mate, I must have watched every shit to average game Sergio played for Athletico, never saw him have a good game, and whilst you could see the odd glimpse of brilliance, my thoughts were “promises a lot, but rarely delivers”.
Maybe it was an age thing, or the way Athletico set up and played, or all three, but I never thought he would go on to consistently become the player he is/was and the best striker we’ve ever had.

The excitement when he came on the pitch for his debut suggests that a lot of city fans either thought or simply hoped he would do well.

Read what I wrote again mate, you’ve misunderstood what I’ve said ;-).

But just to be clear , the times I watched Sergio he had either a shit game or bang average one , which obviously skewed my thoughts on him, I guess I was just unlucky to pick those games out of all the good ones he must have played .

Serie A late 80’s early 90’s was unreal. Batistuta and Hagi both got relegated!! And then played in Serie B. Bierhoff was also in Serie B at the time. Unreal depth of talent during that period!!

The serious point that we're all making with these "alternative fact" views of Sergio is that this is one of the great examples (to us the greatest by far) of a big player grabbing the situation by the scruff of the neck and snatching triumph from the jaws of disaster. Ya Ya, David Silva, Vinnie, KdB, Raheem, Bernado have all done it on the big occasion as well and though he's only 20 Phil Foden is showing that same quality; yet have we ever seen (or heard) that Pogba, Fernandes or any other of the "world class" signings United have made has ever done anything remotely like turn the tide of a big game. The nearest they've come is to con the ref into giving a dodgy pen which a compliant VAR gleefully confirms.

Indeed I'd watched him for a couple of years and was overjoyed when we signed him, thought we were a step below where he already was so it was a fantastic surprise.

Funny on his debut we had that RU blue winding up the Swansea fans at HT then we unleashed Kun on them.

Certainly for me, it was the anticipation of finally seeing him in a Blue shirt, after the summer rumours of him coming to Etihad, the delayed arrival at City (Copa America, I think) and other Bluemooners telling us how good he was.
