I think most, if not all, the “fat lad” comments are aimed at the dad, rather than the poor child.

They really are a very odd personality group. Any little slither of hope they are full on obnoxious, a defeat and they disappear or are rioting. My dad always used to call them inadequates, there's definitely something in their collective make up that's missing.
