Universal basic income

“Something for nothing” rarely survives in nature, especially when others, who ensure they’re not doing “nothing,” have to use their own personal work efforts to both generate that “something” for themselves but also others not willing to do “something for something” for themselves.

Not in favor of handouts, but foursquare in favor of helping hands. The main problem, as always, is those that pollute the clean goals for their own selfish purposes.
Hi Donald

We receive money in exchange for our labour in a capitalist society it isn't free, if we forego the labour and just get the money then prices will increase and the benefit of that money without labour (Free money) will decrease.
But all of the money in the economy come form one central source. It's created from nothing. Everything after that is just accounting.

The main argument for any universal benefit is basically that it's cheaper to simply give the same benefit to everyone and then increase taxes than it is to administer a complex system to check people's eligibility for certain means-based benefits. In theory, if you give everyone 1500 quid, but then increase the income tax of people who earn above a certain amount by 1500 quid, then you can effectively give money only to the poor without needing a to have them prove their income with all of the admin that that entails. However, since tax is typically a race to the bottom, it's politically very difficult to do that.

It's worth mentioning that we already have benefits that aren't means tested. Child benefit, for example, is available to everyone regardless of income. Boris Johnson (or his various partners) can claim child benefit for all of his kids, although presumably that would involve actually acknowledging them.

It's not 'for nothing' though. It provides a real and measurable benefit to society and the economy.

Ah, the 'let them eat gruel' approach to social justice policy. You forgot 'flat screen TV, microwave and mobile phone' though.

Are you sure you are replying to the right person?

Those are now basic consumer products now aren't they?A smart phone is pretty much an essential in an increasing paperless and cashless society with less bank branches.

Well they've got the principle right there, but obviously never underestimate the current Tories' ability to completely fuck up any government programme when it comes to the practicalities. In fact, one of the best arguments against government solutions to problems is that more than half the time they'll be run by a group of people who would like to see them dismantled. But then that's exactly what they want us to think.
