It's an occupation/career they have chosen to do, no-one is forcing anyone to join the armed forces these days.
Is it something I would want to do?
Absolutely not, which is why I have chosen an alternative career path.

You see it in America all the time and the completely OTT adulation they seem to have for their military people.
You can have respect for them without the unnecessary fawning.

Agree. I flew on 4 planes the other weekend and boarding each one, the announcer said first to be asked to board were former and active military personnel and I thought "why?"

I know a lot if people in the military, many have normal jobs. Cooks, drivers accountants etc.

In peace time. In times of conflict they deploy as needed. Don't let the media diminish your respect for those who are ultimately willing to put themselves at risk of injury or worse in order to defend what is right.
