He can’t withdraw the US from NATO. Needs senate approval.

He can withdraw troops from Europe and refuse to help but can’t unilaterally withdraw from it. So any moves can be undone by a new president

I suspect that's Fox spin - Leavitt said she expected that it would come up in their conversation, but that doesn't mean that it was "about withdrawing" rather than bellyaching, whining and demands.

Trump is known to be annoyed at Europe failing to help in his illegal war, he is known for changing his mind so we’ll see in a couple of hours

Trump can talk about this all he wants, but unless he gets a two-thirds super majority vote in Congress to leave NATO, then he can Foxtrot Oscar.

He can't even draw down troops significantly because Congress passed a law against it. He can piss and moan all he likes but can't actually do anything, though of course he might try.

Where's he going to bomb Iran from without bases in Europe? It's time our politicians grew a pair and tell him publicly that he's more than welcome to close his military bases in Europe. Losing the military bases in Europe would be a bigger disaster for America than it would be for the rest of NATO.

Of course the rest of NATO would need to get it's act together, on things it relies on the yanks for such as spy satellites etc, but NATO's major enemy is already embroiled in a major war and that buys us time to get our act together.

Well when a tanker holds 2m barrels of oil and oil is at $90 per barrel, the value of oil on that ship is $180,000,000.

So whilst $2m isn’t a small amount, it’s only just over 1% of the value of the goods the tanker is carrying.
 
Iran cannot lose, it just has to survive.

It is not about massive weapons or full scale war. USA can use all the weapons they want, but Iran only need 1 Drone. One strike on a cargo ship in the Strait of Hormuz, and suddenly the risk becomes too high. Shipping slows, insurance spikes, routes get avoided and that ripple travels fast around the world. It can destroy the world's economy. Insurance companies would never insure these ships.

And it doesn't stay as some distant geopolitical issue. It lands right at people's doorsteps. Fuel prices creeping up, food getting more expensive, businesses struggling. It's everyday life that feels it first.

That's why it's so unsettling to watch things escalate. With Israel continuing to bomb Lebanon, and the Strait of Hormuz remaining shut - how long would it actually be before the world starts running short of oil? 1 month? 2 months? It's not going to be far off that!

There's a reason no US president was stupid enough to create conflict with Iran.
