Militarily the US/NATO wiped the floor with the Vietnamese and Taliban. The problem with these wars is that the locals only have to outlast the foreign army. They're not going anywhere and they have the easier supply of men, materiel etc. Meanwhile the war becomes politically impossible overseas as more soldiers die and the costs accelerate.

That's the basic reason so many of these wars fail to achieve their aims and the European empires collapsed. Unfortunately nobody ever learns.
