Couldn't get the votes so hes withdrawn.

Reports no one can get the vites because theres 7 or 8 hard no's who want the new speaker to committ something to them which would be neigh on impossible to get a majority.
So what happens if those nutters keep refusing? Democrats have the numbers for Jeffries? Surely they wouldn't let the Democrats take the house through stubbornness.

Stalemate. Jordan/Scalise were as likely as any to gain support.

The nutters have a hold on the GOP. The more moderate Republicans would have to look for dem support to break it. But any GOPer looking to work with the dems is asking for MAGA retribution. And that's not just a political risk your talking potential physical intimidation and violence.

It's hard to see a way out. But there is a cost to this. Having a speaker gives power and influence. These individuals are normally the key fundraisers. So having chaos means your self harming your ability to fund raise. In addition to just looking like a shit show. Especially if this leads to a shutdown. And a shutdown with the Ukraine and Israel situations live.

It takes a majority vote of the House to elect a speaker except that members not present or voting "present" instead of for a candidate do not count towards the total. Republicans have the majority representation, but there's 8 to 14 or so Republican members who seem to have mutually exclusive demands. Democrats do not have the numbers to elect a speaker on their own even if they vote in a block.

Currently there are 221 Republican members of Congress and 212 Democratic members (with 2 seats vacant). If all members are present and vote for a candidate it will take 217 votes to elect the Speaker. Assuming that every member is present and votes for a candidate with all Democratic members voting for Jeffries, Jeffries would need 5 Republican votes to be elected Speaker.

In other news it looks like Allen Weisselberg may well have committed perjury during his testimony in the Trump NY fraud case. If so he could end up re-aquainting himself with Rikers Island. His only get out of jail card (pun intended) may be to flip on Trump.

Fairly predictable that Trump's people will lie in court.

The problem here is that the outcome is decided and all that remains is the Judge is going to set damages / fines. Its not going to help if the judge summarises that the defence witnesses have been lying in a case around fraud. So it seems the strategy is it's less embarrassing for Trump if his accountant lies and this is how it is for him, always trying to keep the scam going, even when it's all coming out in court.
