US Politics Thread

He spouted off about freedom and anti-banning, then threatened to buy Twitter, then offered to buy Twitter for a ridiculously over inflated price, then tried to back out, then got sued, then said he’d buy it again the day before he was to be deposed, then the Judge gave him until the end of the month to buy it or be sued, then he bought it, now he’s about to fire 50% of the workforce and wants people to BUY their access to Twitter for between $6 & $8!

That’s the abridged version.
And presumably over the next year or two, something like Jack Dorsey's new Social Media company will release a product that catches on in the mainstream and Twitter will eventually become another GETTR, Gab or Parler that will be ignored by normal people. It will just take a few high profile people with tens of millions of followers to jump ship to the successor to Twitter to trigger a stampede out of Twitter, and Musk will be in charge of just another Alt Right network worth next to nothing and will owe the banks who financed the purchase a few tens of billions. What a shame.

Nothing a few million shares of TSLA can’t fix! ;-)

Twitter has become the no1 platform for Journalists to release news, they do this with the backing of news orgs like BBC and Wash Post etc. The top 100 accounts are littered with these Journalists. The fact that these people are on there is what makes it such a popular and active medium. The right wing alternates dont have it and therefore just feel dead, they are dead.

The problem Musk has is that if something happens so top news orgs start to doubt then Twitter could be very vulnerable. These news orgs are probably asking themselves why do they supply the content for free and get nothing back.

If Twitter takes a hit (and the way it's currently going it's looking more likely than not unless thin skin sorts his life out) it's going to push mainstream political discourse further into the fringes and marginalise the centre ground unless a viable alternative platform steps up.

It'll take years to get to the same level Twitter is currently at.

I'd go further and say maybe nothing could get as big as twitter again. But twitter has every big company and media org/journalist putting content out as well as celeb types and small time tweeters.

If twitter got very toxic then a lot of big corps and media / jornalists could just pull out. If they do twitter would change overnight. But I suspect that Musk wont chance it.

Crime is out of control in New York. According to the current governor, she called her opponent a 'data denier', when stats say otherwise. Let's hope we have a new governor when we awake next Wednesday morning.

That’s only true for murder.
