US Presidential Election, Nov 5th 2024

Re abortion: Doesn't repealing Roe v Wade place abortion rights in the remit of the individual states? I read some states were voting on abortion issues as well as the presidential election. Maybe there is a realpolitik answer here but doesn't that now provide a buffer between him and abortion rights?

If Biden had stepped down earlier, and it hadn't been Harris as the only realistic choice at such short notice, then I'm sure the Dems would have had a much better chance.

She never really established herself as a politician in her own right. And being "nice" and peddling "aspirational" empty quotes isn't enough to lead.

I know I'm probably wrong but, as an outsider here, she always came across as a bit of a vacuum.
.
Trump isn't the answer either, and I don't think the divide over there is going to get any better.

Looking forward to the USA getting it's act back together in 2028.
The world will end before then!

Articulated brilliantly however it’s easy to slag off Harris campaign after the result - I personally felt she was doing all the right things, positive, hardly any gaffes, smashed Trump in the head to head debate.
If she had focused on the economy progressing and job sector doing well no one would have cared.

Trump won on lies, misinformation and being a WWE figure that ‘owns the libs’, can ‘Make America Great Again’ and is against the ‘Mainstream Media’ all backed by the worlds richest man pumping constant propaganda for Trump on the biggest social media platform. I don’t think a Harris change of philosophy for her campaign would have made any difference .
Hindsight is a wonderful thing of course but even before the election one of the criticisms of her campaign was there was little vision, she was not brave, there was no signature speech and on the key issues such as the economy and immigration she could not win the argument, even though the economy has been doing so well.

Quite rightly people pointed out well what does Trump say on policy etc and the double standards which exist. But it appears his base was going to vote for him regardless and Harris never made the argument to offer an appealing alternative.

There were six or seven ballots on abortion rights on election night. I think most were easing restrictions and most passed (Florida didnt).

I find this really hard to understand. I did think he might win, almost a reverse of the right margin last time. I didn't think it would be such a clear win, and I don't think anyone did besides trump himself and some RW media outlets, but they would say that whatever.

Trump won Florida by roughly 13 points, which is 10 more than in 2020.

Texas also moved 10 points in his favor.

He won Ohio by about 11 points, 3 more than in 2020.

Big Blue states?

New York moved 13 points toward him.

Virginia shifted 6 points in his direction.

Sadly, this was a Big Red Wave…or more accurately, a BIG TRUMP WAVE!
