Looking at the results in hindsight, the Democrats would probably have needed a transformational candidate ( an Obama or Clinton) type orator to give them a chance of winning.

In fairness, the built in dislike for Trump that many had, and the full throated support from the media that Democrats had made this 'seem' potentially closer than it really was...

Bur the people simply stuck to their reality. It's the economy, stupid!
Yes.
If people actually feel worse off (regardless of other issues/stats/gdp/whatever are saying) then it's the main thing.

Sometimes I wonder if it’s less about the right candidate and more about running the best candidate to face the opposition. Although not in the way of Obama (!!!!), Trump was certainly a transformational orator. Walz was almost a better match to that than she was.

I also thought Walz was good

An article which sums up pretty well how it seems to me.

I hereby swear on the hamstrings of KDB never to return to this place, it's not good for me.

Best wishes to our American blues.

Donald Trump 2024 was the worst candidate in modern American history. I’m talking basic things like sounding incoherent and unhinged, demeaning the United States and various groups of Americans, being a convicted felon, having blatant financial corruption, and facing numerous accusations of sexual assault.

I’m skeptical of the theory that Trump voters simply didn’t know a lot of this, and wouldn’t vote for him if they did. He’s done so many awful things, as have the people around him, that some gets though. His Madison Square Garden rally last month, for example, showcased the MAGA movement’s racism and violent threats, getting attention on TikTok and other atypical information streams.

Millions voted for it anyway. Some revel in the awfulness, some don’t care for it but obviously don’t mind it that much, some deny it to rationalize their partisanship. But they saw it.

I think this will go very bad

Therein lies the problem. Lack of education.

Trump will now inherit an economy that is not only already the envy of the world, but still got another 2% reduction in interest rates to come, if we can just keep inflation at normal 2.something levels!

But, Americans are, by and large, too uneducated to understand the basics of such things, and just as he rode the coattails of the Obama economy that rise from the GFC of 2008/09, so he will get the benefit of the post-pandemic management of the economy that has been roundly praised as brilliantly managed to a soft landing, plus the return of American manufacturing and the largest domestic energy production in history!
ChicagoBlue, you represent the kind of opinion Americans tend to reject every time. The idea that they are stupid, and you know best what's good for them .

Most of the west has let the inequality of bargaining power between capital and labour spiral since at least the 80s, what we are seeing is the consequences of that and we in the UK have headed down the same path and anybody watching the US and thinking that's not us needs to think hard. Sure there's certain levers that are different, we don't have the religion, but that doesn't change the underlying fault in the choices we've allowed to be made.

The tragedy is we have no courageous leader or party ready to communicate this in much of the West. I hope we eventually wake up.

Shapiro would probably have been the best bet. But digging into the numbers. It looks like this was inevitable.

He won more votes in every State, every county across the Country. Both Blue and Red areas alike.

AGAIN, an extrapolation that is incorrect.

The American education system is a shambles, with the red states faring the absolute worst. Coincidence? There’s a reason many conservatives want to abolish the Department of Education and have all school funding from the state level…and this result helps prove it.

And, I’m not saying I know what is best for them, I’m pointing out what they have failed to understand from the facts they choose to ignore, or do not simply care to know, or simply cannot understand.

These aren’t my facts, they’re from BLS, the Federal Reserve, leading economic indicators, and literal prices in front of their face. But, as if by magic, even facts are no longer facts, when the Cult Leader says they’re not true!
