US Presidential Election, Nov 5th 2024

The mental damage is already done. Ask my daughter.

Though I never talk about my work, I have spent two days meeting with a number of different companies in my field. This would be eight companies who do about $100 BB in annual revenue in toto. This would be senior leadership.

Nearly all are nervous; some are scared — especially when I start talking about how much it will cost to hedge risk when the American economic and social bell curve outcome set has been so altered.

Interestingly, the average perspective is “We wanted Trump to win, but we didn’t want the House to go red because balance makes better policy.”

Immigration policy is much more their worry than tariffs as the marketplace will keep tariffs in check (to a point you’ve made and I agree with) but they cannot count on the citizenry or anyone else to prevent a rampantly overreaching ICE.

Just some thoughts.
I'm not claiming any of the nasty stuff won't happen, but until it does it hasn't. Speculation or even fear is fair enough, but presenting scare stories as facts is something which is wearing thin. Not refering to your very personal concerns btw.

What about the young girls at school and college having to deal with the insult 'your body, my choice' being thrown at them from boys since election day?

This isn't a scare story. It's actually happening where I live, and I can only see it getting worse leading up to and beyond inauguration day. Trump's rhetoric is to blame.

Nothing has changed in terms of abortion law since the beginning of the week. Those boys would not be better people today if Kamala had won on Wednesday

I understand — and thank you — my point is (good) companies don’t have the luxury of “wait and see” — they need to have a plan for every outcome; it’s their fiduciary responsibility — and when they look at the new outcome set it would be natural to be concerned.

But the girls are worse off for having experienced that, as mine is — it’s a net negative, not a status quo.

I will say this — just spoke with my wife (since I’m traveling) and she said, “I’m not going to let this asshole ruin my life. We’re going to protect our kids, switch all our charitable giving to protect those impacted by him, control what we can control and live our lives.”

She’s right. I’m a very lucky guy. I won’t be the only one in my circle who switches our CG portfolio meaningfully.

And incidentally my daughter who I’m on my way to see right now was extremely well supported by her school and her friends, so I am grateful for that.

If things are that messed up, they were that messed up long before Wednesday and would still be that messed up with a democrat win. That's societal sickness. Granted it may get worse under trump but it's clearly there already. Hope you and yours are ok.
