The naïveté is adorable. Nihilism is the only defen(s)ce.

We are never ever going back to decency.

Ever.

Why would we when lies work so much better?

Explain to me to downside of being a scumbag.
Easier said than done I think. E.g., the Republican governor candidate in NC got blown out in a state that went for Trump because he was leaving bizarre comments on a porn site/was a kook in the Trump mold. Cuomo was brought down in NY for behavior that would barely register had it been Trump. Trump (and to be fair, Bill Clinton) have the "charisma" to get away with it, but most politicians don't.

Had he been the GOP selection for President the NC guy would have won, wouldn’t he? Because the economy. That’s what literally everyone has said here, right? When Don Jr or Miller or Bannon or whomever the next anointed one is runs in 28 we can revisit this.

I repeat — we aren’t ever going back. There will never be a Presidential candidate again who can count on decency, service or kindness to win relative to their opponent.

Ever.

I don't know. Possibly, but I also think a lot of Trump sympathizers are mice who think they're cats. They act like they have some rational reason for voting for him, the economy or whatever, when the reality is they're easy marks and they've been taken in by his personality and his validation of their grievances, and they're ignoring every red flag. That's the particular skill of a conman and not easily replicable by another politician.

Amazing how many younger people voted for Trump off the back of his Joe Rogan podcast appearance.

Let that sink in... THE FUCKING JOE ROGAN PODCAST.

WTF America?
A hundred years ago you would probably have had people thinking the same thing about the radio or TV. Podcasting is just another format / platform and it's probably the new reality. I don't remember the actual figures for the Rogan one, but in terms of reach it was vast - many millions, and much more than any rally or TV appearance I think.

I think there's a legitimate difference though, because with TV news, it was still trained journalists who were doing the interviews. What we have now is a situation where the biggest platforms are hosted by people who are not actually going to hold politicians to account in any way, and couldn't even if they wanted to, because they don't have the training or editorial standards to do so. This isn't just a Trump thing btw. It's not like Harris wasn't appearing on huge podcasts that would give her an easy ride.

We used to have the same criticism when David Cameron would appear on This Morning or The One Show instead of Newsnight or Question Time. Everything is just so stage managed nowadays and even press conferences have plants in them selected to ask low-ball questions that allow the politician to bang on about some key policy. The average Premier League manager has more accountability to the press than the President or Prime Minister these days.

I think it was more “Joe Rogan” that caught the ire, not “podcast.”

The guy is an uber-bro, who sits around shooting the shit while smoking stogies and alluding to conspiracy theories. Every once in a while, you find a nugget, a good quote, or even some semblance of insight, but rarely.

Thankfully, YouTube clips generally cover the interesting 3 minutes in the 3 hrs of garbage you have to get through to find it…if it exists at all.

This is why I (and probably your sister in law) don’t ever want to feel shame about my decision. It gave me the family I have today. (Except my third was a son…three boys and the only football/City fan of the bunch!).
Hmmm… A real mum would have infected the boys with Cityitis at birth. I was deprived as a child. Dad hated football and mum was (whisper it) …..a rag. I’ve never forgiven them.

Due to the long format, I think podcasts are much less stage managed than short TV interviews. Probably one of the reasons Kamala avoided it. Politicians will generally try to avoid or minimise appearances on TV networks that are not 'friendly forces'. I agree with your general point though about the move from things like news night to more 'showbiz' things. Its probably much more pleasant to take questions on your favourite food or hobbies than fiscal policy etc.
