the trophies he won proves that and if anything he kicked off the bayern empire of the past few years even if he got sacked.
Van Gaal is a good manager, obviously. Winning prizes doesn't say it all though, as Pellegrini showed much to my delight.
What people should ask themselves: Is Van Gaal the right manager for United? Or is United ready to commit itself to Van Gaal? Now, that's a BIG doubt for me.
Van Gaal is terrific with youngsters. His strenght is to build with youth, like he did at Ajax and like he laid the fundaments at Barca and Bayern. He isn't scared bleeding them in important matches as well. If United keep their younger players, Van Gaal might be able to get them to play much better. At the moment The Netherlands have a poor squad of players. Van Gaal has brought in a lot of youngsters and that would be the only medicine to try and get past the groupstages.
Van Gaal's weakness is to buy star name players and deal with them as a manager. These kind of players easily get fed up with the fanatic yet childish way he treats all his players. The young ones gain a lot of confidence out of that, the more mature ones get annoyed with him.
So if United say he can have 100-150 million kitty, I would not be too worried about a total transformation. That is if big name players will come to the swamp anyway, knowing they won't play European football and Van Gaal being the man in charge. Again that would be a pity as to when big name players do come in it gains the possibillity of Van Gaal failing.
When Van Gaal comes in, Van Persie would clearly won the battle over Rooney. It will be interesting to see if Van Gaal can handle Rooney.
Wherever Van Gaal enters, he will try and change things the way he wants to. And he wants to change everybody and every acre of space. And he's good at doing that, but I will wonder to see if he gets his way with Ferguson and in a lesser way Charlton looking over his shoulder.
At Bayern he gave his trust to the likes of Alaba, Contento, Badstuber, Kroos and Muller, and it worked. But soon frictions arose with the likes of Demichelis, Ribery, even Van Bommel and -even more noteworthy- the Bayern board that he totally ignored.
Finally Van Gaal has been and will be at war with the media because he simply lacks any trust in them. He treats journo's as boys and they will turn against him. Not face to face, but behind their desk. I wonder if Van Gaal gets the opportunity to intall himself the way Ferguson did.
So, is Van Gaal one of the best managers worldwide? Yes.
Is Van Gaal the best manager for United worldwide? Very much doubt it.
