Vansont Kompany

Tyler called him "Vansont" when he scored against United.

I can't believe today was the first time you'd heard it.

As for "Azar", I'll always call him Hazard, but for a commentator, they have to try and pronounce the players names correctly, I'd imagine it's a fundamental. Plus, it's not just an accent, it's how it's actually pronounced.

Maybe I didn't watch it via Tyler's commentary ;)

Reminds me of David Ginola, went from ''David Ginola'' to ''David Sshinola'' to Dav-id Sshinola''

And don't get me started on Mick Channon / Shannon

Names are names, if you pronounce them wrong then you're no longer saying the correct name. You can't just pronounce it how you like because that defeats the point in naming something. We're not talking about accents here but actual pronunciation.

Every commentator should say the name as it was intended to be pronounced and I think it's really unprofessional how many commentators and pundits (*cough*Jamie Redknapp*cough*) don't even come close to pronouncing names correctly.

Above all it just seems disrespectful. If I went to a country and everybody pronounced my name wrong it would probably start to get on my nerves.

One of the CityTV commentators is awful for it Vansont Komparknee then is italian when Mario plays spanish for silva almost makes me long for the days of Don "Samperdoria" Howe

It's bollocks. Language is 'of the people' so when you're in Rome the Romans pronounce your name as the Romans do. When you're in England the same applies. All this pandering to foreign tongues is not the way.

That's why accents and languages have evolved and that's why we say Aguero whilst the Spanish say A'huerro and whilst we say City and foreigners say Ceetee.

Was it Tyler? He said he'd asked (or checked) how to pronounce Hazard.

At least Tyler does his research

There are plenty of players in our team who have their names pronounced incorrectly every week on MOTD.

De Jong (Dee youngg) and David Silva (Dabveed Seelbva) immediately spring to mind.

I might be wrong, but that does seem very much like the spanish pronounciation of his name and he is after all spanish.

I would rather someone try to pronounce the name correctly and maybe sound a bit silly than come across like someone with a head injury like that one guy who said Balotelli's name about five different ways in one match last season. Who was that guy anyway? Anyone remember?

Errrr, I might be wrong, but that's the point of this thread isn't it? He's saying that the presenters on MOTD repeatedly call him DA-VID SIL-VA when they ought to at least be attempting to pronounce it with a Spanish tongue. The same applies to De Jong ...etc.

Not trying to be a c*nt or anything, just trying to clear it up for you :)

My point (I think, it's 10.40pm and I've downed a few beers), is ''Vincent'' has been with us what?? - three and a half years and all of a sudden he is now ''Vansont''! (or since the derby game in April!)

So do we now have to refer to him on Blue Moon as ''Vanny'', rather than ''Vinny''?
