Was it not Peter Reid who insisted 'Michelle' Vonk was called Michael. He said in interview there are no Michelle's at this club.

You're right, except it was 'Michel', as in Platini.

'Michelle' is the female version of 'Michel'.

'Azar' instead of hazard was annoying me today as well. You are not French, nor am I so please say it without the stupid accent.
Names don't change in different languages...

I'd like to hear him tackle pronouncing Yaya Toure's first name Gnergri (sp)

Was it Tyler? He said he'd asked (or checked) how to pronounce Hazard.

At least Tyler does his research

There are plenty of players in our team who have their names pronounced incorrectly every week on MOTD.

De Jong (Dee youngg) and David Silva (Dabveed Seelbva) immediately spring to mind.

I might be wrong, but that does seem very much like the spanish pronounciation of his name and he is after all spanish.

Errrr, I might be wrong, but that's the point of this thread isn't it? He's saying that the presenters on MOTD repeatedly call him DA-VID SIL-VA when they ought to at least be attempting to pronounce it with a Spanish tongue. The same applies to De Jong ...etc.

Not trying to be a c*nt or anything, just trying to clear it up for you :)

Sorry, 8 is right, I put the correct pronunciation in brackets. Even though I don't speak the language I've actually heard De Jong pronounced differently by different Dutch commentators too.

Because he's Belgian and thats how it's pronounced?

The Belgians do it two ways - Vanson and Finsent. Don't know how they cope with Vinny?

Well i'm still (genuinely) unsure how Micah is pronounced as I've heard three different versions but no definitive one.

With foreign names, some will be pronounced correctly but with an English accent while others will be mangled. We get Gullit routinely pronounced with the correct guttural 'G' while van Gaal and Guus Hiddink are pronounced with a hard 'G'. I've never understood why.

I remember Brian Moore in the 70s being criticised for his crap pronunciation of foreign names. He was almost in tears as he staunchly defended his pronunciation of Ajax like the eponymous scouring powder instead of 'Ayax'. He also wanted to know where all this nonsense would end and asked the audience if we would also have to pronounce Paris as 'Paree'. Good job Paris St Germain hadn't achieved prominence in his day then.

Gnégnéri Yaya Touré, I'd love to hear Tyler try this one out for size lol

A long time ago a Belgian reporter asked Kompany how we shoud pronounce his name, Vinsent or Vanson. Kompany said he prefers Vanson

Who is he named after anyway? Vincent Price?
