Var debate 2019/20

The issue should be - did the referee get the decision right or wrong, not was it “clear and obvious”. It strikes me that VAR “referees” deciding if something is clear and obvious is subjective, not the issue itself - an incident is either a pen or not a pen. Nobody is interested in whether the ref initially got it right or wrong, we are interested in it being right. It is understandable that a ref misses something in real time, it isn’t understandable how they review it in slow motion, and still come to the same wrong conclusion.
The current implementation of VAR is akin to finding previously undiscovered high resolution footage of an unsolved crime taking place, watching the footage in ultra slow motion with facial recognition identifying the assailants, then saying “yes, we can see what has happened, who has done it, and that it was indeed a crime, but current policy states we can’t overturn the investigators’ original conclusion that there is insufficient evidence to charge anyone with the crime based on the previously limited evidence available. Also, the investigator hasn’t seen it. Also, the victim should have fallen backward.”

A poor implementation of this is what most of football governance wants. They will keep this up across all the leagues for a season before collectively coming to the conclusion that VAR is not suited to the sport and abandoning it

And then tell everybody..."we tried it but you all said it didn't work"
I hope you're right.

My point about the monitor was that if pigmol don’t want to be seen to be re-refereeing the game and overruling the ref then how difficult would it have been to say to Marriner that they think he should go and check the monitor. He then doesn’t lose face because he’s just getting to see what he may have missed due to poor view or speed of game etc, he comes back and gives the decision. IF he had then come back and not given the penalty we’d know it was due to game being bent, simple.
This all day long!

I think one of the key points is the top refs are on the pitch, the VAR refs are second or third level so probably don’t want to upset the apple cart. It seems that bar is being used to disallow goals whenever but not correct bad decisions in the attackers favour.

I think with car the offside rule should be feet only as strikers naturally lean forward to look across the line which is putting them offside.

The celebration issue ruling out loads of goals will eventually stop some supporters going to games

So 3 games into the new season, and already we have seen controversy in 2 of our games where we have been not been given certain pens 2 against Spurs, and 1 against Bournemouth. There is nothing wrong with VAR as a hold. Where the blames lies is with those who are overseeing the screens. The way I see it if this continues we will stand no chance of winning the Premier League for the 3rd time on the run.

This is a serious question. Do you think that if this continues where we are not being given certain penalties, will we win the Premier League again. I don't think so. So instead of being level on points with Liverpool, we find ourselves already 2pts behind. If this continues by Christmas we could well be about 8 to 10pts behind Liverpool.

onceablue. I have already said that, that will turn away football supporters from coming to games if they constantly see decisions going against them. Just like we have seen in our 3 games.

davek how do we know that there are pitch side monitors at all premier league games. Judging by the way that VAR is working there are no pitch side monitors for any premier League games. So that just leaves the video refs to be given carte blanche to over turn any decisions the refs gives.

EVERY game has a pitchside monitor, and that’s a fact.
