VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

:) Corners have become huge because they have turned into NFL moves which can have game changing impacts with weak refereeing but they are, nevertheless, just a method of getting the ball back in play. Next we will have seven referees throwing handkerchiefs on the floor.

Frankly, I would go the other way and reduce the impact of corners by applying the law properly, maybe even penalising offences when the ball isn't in play. But I'm not some suit who has to think up new ways to fuck the game over.

Like this stupid idea of taking an outfield player off after a goalkeeper injury. I mean, just why? They want to stop tactical time-outs? Don't let more than one player approach the coach during playing time, preferably only the captain, in the same way only he can approach the referee (yeah, right).

And, for the rest, just enforce the rules as they are. All the nonsense will soon stop.

It’s 90+ mins, Man City are playing Madrid in the European final. They are losing 1-0. Foden has the ball and is whizzing down the line, a player closes in, he crosses it and the ball goes behind. Madrid players are screaming and appealing that the ball deflected back off Foden, City players and fans scream it come off the Madrid player.
The ref is totally unsure as could not see from his angle.

Would you rather he … makes a complete guess ? Or someone with a better angle clearly sees it’s a corner and lets the ref know within 10-15 seconds ?

Either way, that's definitely a goal-kick to Madrid and probably a yellow card for Foden.

I would rather VAR fucks off. It's only a game.

How about this: It’s 90+ mins, Man City are playing Madrid in the European final. They are winning 1-0. Vinicius has the ball and is whizzing down the line, a player closes in, he crosses it and the ball goes behind. City players are screaming and appealing that the ball deflected back off Vinicius, Madrid players and fans scream it came off the City player.

Funny as fuck. Swings and roundabouts. Life lessons. Doesn't mean people won't be going ballistic, though. Always have always will, even with VAR.

VAR says penalty to Madrid : )

That would be fine but we all know it will sometimes take five minutes. The stoppages are killing the game. I’m not anti VAR if implemented properly. Perhaps we need a time limit on decisions.

VAR for corners is long overdue, can’t believe the amount of wrongly given goal kicks given instead of corners. Its a huge error from the officials on a regular basis and rather infuriating (when it’s for your team)
Serious question, where do you want all this to end? Next it will be throw-ins, then free-kicks anywhere on the pitch, then we’ll have them checking the toss-up for the kick-off making sure there were the correct number of revolutions. This is a very slippery slope in my opinion

Something I think has changed in recent years is that refs dont seem to know what constitutes a foul nowadays. Shoulder charges like Nunes yesterday becoming a yellow, a couple in Utds game today, just now in the Chelsea game straight forward classic fouls just not given, other innocuous stuff being carded.

It feels like they have lost the plot compared with refs in previous years. Maybe its the increased scrutiny or social media but I think VAR has contributed to all the confusion that stinks the game out nowadays.
I'd go further and say var has changed the game completely. Players feigning injury, diving and constantly looking foe the ref to go to the telly.
Refs lost all authority on the pitch.

Which is why they were dead against it until they realised it can be a nice post-retirement income stream :)

Whatever happened to them not "re-refereeing the game"? I dont like it. Just more and more stoppages. Yes i'll complain when we get a corner against us for a goal kick but tough shit and it happens to everyone.

They totally are trying to re-referee the game.

It's absolute bollocks, they may as well bring in var for throw-In's as well.

Its already gone a long way towards ruining the game, may as well go the final yard.

with you mate. They should be removing it from situations instead of adding it to more. Just keep it for offsides on goals.

You forgot the bit where the TV company only shows the VAR officials certain angles of the incident and keeps other clearer ones to themselves.

Where was VAR when Earling was twice fouled off the ball last night?

The first one was arguably a yellow card, but Pawson just waved it away. The second one looked like a deliberate attempt to injure him and should have been a red card, but VAR seemed to just ignore it.

I'll take another look at it later, but I was convinced at the time that he was trying to take him out of the game.

One of the reasons Var was brought in was to spot off the ball fouls, those that the referee can't see.
Aa you say the defender fouled him twice but Var like the commentator said at the time must gave thought it was a coming together!
Twice, with the ball nowhere near.

Bent.
