VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

One of the reasons Var was brought in was to spit off the ball fouls, those that the referee can't see.
Aa you say the defender fouled him twice but Var like the commentator said at the time must gave thought it was a coming together!
Twice, with the valley nowhere near.

Bent.
Precisely my point.

It seems more and more that it is being used to re-referee the game rather than its original intended purpose.

Oh I agree with you about re-refereeing it but that did not happen last night.
One off the ball incident perhaps, maybe, could be put down to a coming together but twice ! with the same 2 players, the same one still standing and the same one on the deck !!!
If the ball is 20 yards away and not directly involving those 2 players they do not need to be that close that a coming together can happen......unless of course one player is fouling the other, step forward Var....... to totally ignore both incidents.

The second 'coming together' injured him and had he not been made of granite he might have had to go off. I'm convinced it was a deliberate attempt to take him out of the game. I don't even recall if it was given as a free kick.

That would be fine but we all know it will sometimes take five minutes. The stoppages are killing the game. I’m not anti VAR if implemented properly. Perhaps we need a time limit on decisions
Absolutely. The "clear and obvious" thing has gone completely out of the window, despite PGMOL's continual insistence to the contrary. If a VAR ref can't decide after 30 seconds then it's not clear and obvious IMHO. They've well and truly ruined the game by the way VAR is being implemented.
I hark back to the WC in Russia when VAR was first introduced to us. It was a success, but it's now mutated into a counter productive monster. Regrettably I think we all know that the more they tinker with it, the worse it becomes.

In the Liverpool game last night Ballard was pushed in the back at a set piece. 2 hands used to push him over. Var said it was a "coming together ". Ummm
In our game at Fulham, when the centre half took Erling down, the co-commentator said he's marking him so closely there's bound to be contact. A foul in my book.

Ill tell you what is happening with VAR compared to when we just had a ref..... The explanations and reasons for giving fouls/red/yellows/ignoring fouls are being rubber stamped by tech.

If a ref (Before VAR) came out with the sort of shite that comes out of that VAR room as excuses, or supposed reasons not to give or to give fouls they would have been retrained or sacked.

The standards are getting so low that it has become a lottery more than ever. Well trained refs were never this bad. No wonder they dont know what a foul is, but VAR can give an explanation that the sheep will lap up.

Are you talking about the off the ball incident?
The ball was a good 20 yards away from them and yet he was marking him so closely Haaland ended up on the deck.
The kind of incident Var was brought in for but on this occasion it was a 'coming together '
Mind you, our resident apologists would just say Var would only intervene for red card offences or some other crap excuse.

yeh yeh, footballs 'dead' because we will now get correctly awarded corners instead of the refs guessing.
How many times a season is a goal scored from an incorrectly given corner? I’d be pretty certain that in the Premier League you could count them on the fingers of one hand. So over 380 games, maybe 5 corners are the issue. I personally don’t want even more delays to the game for something that isn’t a major problem.

VAR for yellow cards is almost certainly coming somewhere down the line with the mission creep going on

It won’t cause any delay, it will be better for the game.

Ffs. We’ve had so many promises about what VAR will and will not do and it looks absolutely nothing like it was sold. It might start off where they don’t waste any time checking corners, but I guarantee you, the first time they stop checking after 30 seconds and then later find out that it shouldn’t have been a corner and someone scored from it (especially if it’s against one of the cartel), then all bets are off. It’ll be ok, let’s look for 45 seconds, then a minute, then one and a half, then two. Can you seriously not see the mission creep?

I'm not against it for the reasons previously described. A key clarification would need to be if they will be checking all corner kicks and all goal kicks. They could presumably reverse a corner kick to a goal kick or a goal kick to a corner kick.

Now I know most of you, outside of Hammer, are sick of VAR and take issue with corners being checked. And from that standpoint I'm against it as well, that the last thing we need is more VAR. Though I would add the caveat that this is a much less disruptive use of VAR than how it has been used. And if they're not going to do a manager's challenge system for the WC, which it doesn't sound like they will, then they feel the need to make changes to VAR, improvements, that they can promote like this. I just want to be clear that I do not support VAR or what they have done to the sport, but on the other hand, if we're gonna have it, I'd rather it be used for purely factual decisions rather than for subjective or marginal decisions. And in some cases you could get a marginal corner kick / goal kick decision. And the potential for a delay is there. But most should be quickly confirmed, and it has the potential to stop a howler that leads to a goal which does happen and could happen at the WC. But it would be a very different kind of delay and decision than we've been dealing with. It's not this would disallow a goal that had already been scored or anything. Though, still, they are disrupting the flow by delaying the corner from taking place. But then again there have been plenty of instances (pre-VAR even) in which corners or free kicks were delayed for a variety of reasons.

So while I certainly share your concerns regarding any Expansion of VAR at this point, if this could lead to a shift from the VAR team focusing more on corner kicks / goal kicks and maybe less on the more annoying more disruptive stoppages for reviewing subjective decisions, I would say this has the potential to be an improvement to the overall way that VAR works, particularly at the WC which FIFA itself runs rather than the various leagues which one would think would go more smoothly, even though in my estimation it hasn't at the previous 2 World Cups but we will see. With the WC Draw being announced tomorrow I would expect there to be more details about any changes to VAR that will be at the WC.
