VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

Where is the Semi-automated VAR we were told is coming in this season

Tony Scholes, the Premier League’s Chief Football Officer, gave club officials an update during the meeting; indicating that the technology may not be in place by mid-November either. As such, a winter or early 2025 launch appears more likely.

Howard Webb, the chief refereeing officer of Professional Game Match Officials (PGMOL), had hoped for the technology to be introduced this year, especially after it had been successfully tested in other competitions. “It is crucial to manage expectations on the launch date,” said a Premier League official. The ongoing trials are necessary to ensure the system’s smooth operation. But they mean that fans and players alike will need to wait longer for the improved efficiency it promises.

The ESPN guy said a while ago, it’s almost certainly going to be next season now.

They refused to utilise the existing solution that is working very well all over the world and is approved by Fifa. As they wanted to develop their own bespoke solution. So they have purposely delayed it. Has anyone got any faith it will work properly if they have had anything to do with its development, answers on the back of a Postcard please?

"Hold on Brooksy...I think he's offside mate."

"Ok Cavo...Can you disallow it quickly as Virgil is in my ear?"

"Doing my best...YNWA"

"YNWA"

"Found it! His shoelace was a millimetre over the halfway line. Son is offside."

"Thank fuck for that. Looking forward to you reffing the final with the mighty reds mate."

"Cheers pal."

"Lads, it Howard here...You do realise the whole country just heard that?"

"Fuck off Webby! Is this another of your pranks mate?"

"I suggest you look back up at the sky sports pics..."

"FUCK!"

"FUCK!'

"Don't worry Cavo, you've still got the final. I'll get Atters to drop a bigger bollock in the other semi"
I don't think they'll be playing the live conversations between VARs as they are making the decisions. Rather they'll have the referee (or one of the VARs over the loudspeaker?) announce the final decision and any important details about what led to the decision similar to how the American NFL referees announce penalty decisions.

Which is undesirable for the British public and frankly even the wider European or World Football fan, not only will this sort of thing come across as an attempt to "Americanize" football, but it sends us further down the VAR rabbit hole with more "additions" (rather than "subtractions") to try and painfully and foolishly make VAR "better" or "broader". This is going in the wrong direction, Football is not like American NFL in that sport the referees talk to the crowd and stuff when giving penalties. That's not supposed to happen in Football!! Football is supposed to be a free flowing sport!!

The match should not be subject to referees (or VARs) explanations of decisions over the loud speaker that shouldn't be over analyzed in the first place. This is a violation of football's nature which is a sport that is to be played with a steady and a natural flow. This will only add on the interrupting time of a VAR review to now include one more minute of the referee (or VAR?) preparing a speech to explain what happened. If only they could detach from this VAR-induced way of thinking and start going in a better direction rather than digging a deeper hole for the sport to have to get out of. More VAR gimmicks are not helpful at this point. We need to escape from this rabbit hole not go down it further!

The only announcements will be either for ‘factual’ VAR overturns, offside and handball by the goal scorer. Or subjective overturns by the referee after viewing the monitor.

It’s perfectly clear now that as soon as they start making the TV sign, that they’re about to overturn the on-field decision. From what I’ve seen the explanation is usually drowned out by cheering/ booing anyway, as everyone knows what’s coming from the air TV sign.

The first question to ask will be how accurate it is? I couldn’t find an answer about the FIFA system

Well it was used at the last world cup 2 years ago and in the Champions League since and don't remember any controversy. Why the PL decided to ignore this system completely is frankly bizarre!!

I'm pretty much convinced it will work properly. What I am more concerned about is whether it will be applied properly.

If the league wasn't so obviously bent I'd have ore faith it could work properly.

"After consulting J.Carragher. Salah wasn't offside. Goal to Liverpool!"
