VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

If we have to have VAR, why on earth is football unique in using it to overturn obvious errors?

In other sports, notably tennis, rugby, cricket, it is used to reach the correct decision. Football is the only sport that needs its governing body to come up with explanations (excuses) for VAR decisions, and whole spin off programmes analysing decisions week after week.

Here's an idea. Put foreign officials on VAR. They will have no club allegiances, and no friendships or loyalties with the on field officials.

Go back say 30 -40 years ago look at rugby compared to football one was basically still or coming out of amateur/non professional game, the other was a long standing professional game, fast forward too today and with refs,TMO and VAR one is a well run professional game the other is an absolute shambles how can it be going backwards with technology instead of forward and improving..

Still annoyed about this. I was never pro VAR as I suspected it would be poorly implemented. I was persuaded by the argument that in a fast game it would be a tool for the REF to make better decisions.

It really just isn’t that because of the way it has been implemented.

If you had an off the record chat with last nights ref I’m sure he’d say he thought it might have been a handball from Erl but wasn’t sure as he didn’t have a great view.

In a better VAR system he lets the goal stand and then calls himself to view the pictures to make a better decision. It really isn’t hard and it is mystifying why the current crocks of shit is allowed to roll on unchallenged

If only PIGMOL took that sensible approach

The problem now is that on occasions the ref is making a mistake and VAR is compounding it. It's got benefits no doubt, but the fact we're however many years into it and these basic similar problems exist tells a tale.

There’s fans at every club who think the same but it’s fairly obvious who PIGMOL favour
True.
PVMOL and the PL are hand in glove. Its is seen by them as an entertainment business. They will do what they can to make it edgy and tight if they can. VAR is a wonderful tool for them.
They clearly have their favourites and we all know who they are….

This is my belief too
100%.

Many examples to prove the point.

Humans are corruptible and have been corrupted by vested interests.

When Riley and Webb have been, or are currently, in charge the corruption starts at the very top.

The lunatics are running the asylum and manipulating in plain sight.

No surprise that they don't want refs miked up to the live broadcast, or explaining decisions to players or VAR in real time as is successful in Rugby.

Silence is the comfort blanket for this discredit mob !!

I noticed that when Haaland scored there was only about 30 seconds left to play so how did he come out with all the extra added time???

They played about 90 seconds after the restart from the disallowed goal.

During added time, Doku went down in the 92nd minute, and it took over a minute before the game restarted with the two subs. Given that it's a minimum of 4 minutes, it's not a huge difference to add on 20 seconds or so.

McAtee came on with about 20 seconds left of normal time, so assume if the ref had already signalled 4 mins, it could have been added on for that substitution too.
