VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

Correct red card for Millwall on keeper.

VAR also showing deflected ball came off Millwall own player so Palace goal shouldn’t have been ruled out, sorted out in seconds. glad that got overturned.

2 major decisions correct.
correct decisions.
But it's absolutely shite.
And ruined football as a spectator sport.

Extra work for the refs
This will be fun

The IFAB have voted unanimously in favour of amending Law 12.2. The amendment means goalkeepers, from next season, will have eight seconds to release the ball before the opposing team is awarded a corner kick. On-field referees will be aided in their decision-making by a visual five-second countdown

Great; a countdown clock. How very NFL.

*Sigh*

Totally pointless and nonsensical. Why a corner kick? Why not an indirect free kick inside the box?

Since when is this even a point of emphasis? The sport has enough damn problems with VAR and all the IFAB rule changes that go along with it. A visual five-second countdown? Really? Who's bright idea was this? Those running football have not a clue what they're doing anymore, it's getting more and more pathetic.

Good idea, sick of the time wasting goalies do.

It's already in the laws that goalkeepers have to release the ball after 6 seconds when they have taken control of it using their hands or arms if not an indirect freekick is awarded. How many times have you seen this put in action recently?
This is just another new law that will be ignored by the referee and VAR depending on the phase of the game or the teams involved much like has been demonstrated recently with VAR ignoring a penalty to City v Madrid, ignoring Liverpools offside goal against City and not overturning the referees clear and obvious error in chalking off a City goal against Spurs.

Do these people not realise football fans don't want football to be like nfl or any other yank sport as they're all shite
Amen, but I got news for ya. Yank sports have been harmed far worse than football if you can believe that. In the NFL, most of the changes revolve around player safety, but what a farce it's turned into. Have you seen NFL "kickoffs" these days? Goodness gracious. They are forced to stay "frozen" in place until the ball is caught, and the kicker is all alone. It's hideous. Even Trump has spoken out about it. Over the years, they've shortened the game tremendously, with a running clock. Long story short, the NFL was a legitimate sport 20 years ago, but these days, it's a complete joke.

Then there's baseball, a sport that at its best was glorious. It was truly "timeless". No clocks, no nothing, it was played at a natural pace. But a couple years ago they implemented a "pitch clock" which is contrary to everything baseball has always stood for. Not only that but they implemented other crazy rules that limit defensive strategy. And unlike the NFL, there's no "player safety" excuse. It's utter garbage now. Pretty much all American sports are unwatchable these days, but of course, as with football in the UK, fans continue to pack the stadiums so these sports remain profitable. Nothing is holy anymore in the world of sports. It's sad because i grew up in a time where all sports were epic, both American and British and to see sports descend into this kind of madness is deeply troubling.

Wow.
The semi-automated offside is not working.
The VAR is now having to go back to the "old-fashioned" drawing of the lines.

It'll be hard to ignore with a visual countdown clock. Imagine a match determined by a goalkeeper kick "violation". It should of course be at the referee's discretion. How about when a goalkeeper goes to ground after an important save and stays down for a 4 to 5 seconds in "relief" near the end of a match? Now he's gotta get up within 2 seconds and kick it? There's supposed to be strategy involved. Does the goalkeeper kick it deep, which requires time for his teammates to run down pitch and get into position. Or does he throw it to a defender? This needs time to develop. This is a natural part of football, and if you really want to preserve any time wasted, ensure that the timekeeper tracks the time that the goalkeeper is holding the ball over the course of the match and add it on to stoppage time. To attempt to enforce something almost entirely benign as if referee's can't handle this on their own is bizarre. Then again maybe referee's can't do basic things on their own any more due to all the technological nonsense they are tasked with these days. Sad!!

You mean the 'interpretation' of when the ball was passed which has a margin of error of around 30cm if the attacking player is running at full pace?

That 'old-fashioned' method of drawing of lines?

That's an insult to the term "old-fashioned". More like back to "guesstimating" and holding the match hostage. The level of incompetence and unpreparedness is jarring. What irony to have the long awaited debut of what they've been hyping for several years to reduce the time of offside decisions to fail so spectacularly and produce maybe the longest VAR delay ever. It once again reinforces how incompetent everyone involved in VAR is. They must think football is a video game and these sort of things will all just come together smoothly. Imagine the panic and the utter confusion in that VAR box when their long awaited system abruptly failed so spectacularly. After 5 minutes of panicking trying to get SA Offsides to work, they threw their hands up in their air, and were back to drawing lines. Absolute buffoonery!!
