VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

Well, here we go. Another nail in the coffin of the spirit of the game. Ah well, everybody seems to want it because it has nice graphics.

No word on how it actually works, though.
At least we know how it doesn't work.
It didn't work on Tuesday night.

I know that.

What camera footage? Fps? How many cameras? How do they double up on all angles? How many data points per player? Where are the data points? Interpolating between frames? Continually monitored or collected from just from one frame at the moment the ball is kicked. How do they stop that nonsense where a defender's leg was attached to an attacker? What is the manual involvement on the subjective calls? What is the procedure?

Speaking of kick frames, without an inertia sensor, how do they determine it? Fps? What about interpolating between frames?

And what about the graphics? Do they add any value? Or is it just a gimmick for people who are convinced by a nice artificially produced graphic?

All these questions and many, many more for a system that is supposed to guarantee accuracy to the mm. Completely unnecessarily in my view.

fuck knows! and can't be arsed with finding out either. Sure the info is out there.
As long as it provides more accuracy and we get less delays that's all i care about.

Why do you always assume if something doesn't work straight away then that's it forever ?!
All tech introductions take a bit of time to come through, a few teething issues and the odd mistake - any rational person can understand that. You have zero patience and just absolutely desperate to go berserk over anything you can find. chill out!

Redshirt - Onside

Sky Blue/Maroon/Yellow and black - Offside

You could in theory end up with a situation here where a goal is given in the Preston V Burnley game, using the benefit of the doubt leaway. Which would have been disallowed if Preston had been a Premier League club and they’d have been using SAOT.

Would have thought it makes more sense to save it for when the same system could be used across all matches in the same round.
Semis at wembley springs to mind.

How do you know it's more accurate if you don't know how it works?

no one knows until it's been bought in and we see statistics over time to see if it has improved decisions and see also if it has improved the speed of decisions, will take a few months to get a clear overall picture.
It's been trialed before, i assume they have run tests and have confidence it will be better than standard VAR. Its called progress with trial and error - exactly how it should be. If it's a load of shit, then scrap it and look at other ways to find a quicker/better system.

You are aware the announcement says it won't improve accuracy, but will make decisions faster? Probably bullshit.

Apart from that, how it works should be explained before it is introduced, otherwise you can't judge. Again, if you don't know how it works, you can't judge if it's making the right calls or not. Or you just believe what the PL tells you .....

Well, i don't want to get a bachelor degree to find out how every single aspect into semi automation works.

this is good brief and i welcome any form of upgrade.

Do i have full confidence it will get everything 100% right, no i don't - doesn't mean we should give up trying.

That's the FIFA system and I know all that. I have a long list of questions about that too. But I won't bore you with them.

I get that it may be good enough for you to assume it works, but it isn't good enough for me when it is claimed to be accurate to the mm.

So you would vote against it being bought in ? All clubs including City want this introduced.

Agree but not sure why it took so long to work out Haaland’s goal was on side.

Why bring it in halfway through the season when they voted against it at the start of the season ?
It would not be a level playing field to bring it in mid-season.

The rules should be set at the beginning of the season and implemented throughout the season. Otherwise, you get some teams who fall foul of, or benefit pre rule change that the change addresses, and that is simply unfair.

Sigh. If I was a club I probably wouldn't care.

But I am someone who watches the game and has done all my life. I want a game that is easily understood and enjoyed by the people attending games. That is the most important thing for me because without people at games going crazy, the game will become as sanitised as American football.

I also want easy to understand rules that can be immediately judged with reasonable accuracy by the people in the stadium. I want a goal to be disallowed for offside immediately, if it is going to be, so fans can go crazy. I want people to shout and scream at officials when I think they are wrong, and they will be sometimes. I want cheating to be punished. I want people to shout and scream at opposing fans and, yes, to be able to say naughty things about them. I want people going to matches to be able sit amongst like-minded fans who they have generally known for years. I want lower prices so real fans aren't priced out.

Football is losing itself and all this technology fuckwittery is part of the problem. As are the clubs who don't really care about any of the above, no matter what they say.

Amen brother.

Polite reminder we have goals disallowed because a mm fraction of an attacker’s body is in front of a defender every week Errors like the image were rare and had VAR illuminated all errors like the ghost goal at OT? Give me an very occasional errors than the farce like we had last night searching for a fraction so they can gleefully disallow a perfectly good goal
Thats the laws of the game not VAR…

“Errors” in favour of United were regular!!
