VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

Jota dive and awarded a penalty v Wolves at the weekend - thankfully we have VAR who overturned this decision. Some would rather scrap VAR and see the likes of Liverpool and Man Utd get awarded penalties on a regular basis everytime they dive in the box.
But a similar incident in the Milan match tonight and the ref didn't hesitate to give a correct call, giving the attacker a yellow card for a dive.
No pussyfooting around and ended up with the player being sent off for a yellow.
A referee that wasnt hiding behind VAR to make a decision for him or checking if it should have been a penalty.
Refs need to be spotting these infringements and not to be using VAR unless it is a absolutely necessary.

99% of Refs would have pointed to the spot for the challenge on Jota, it looked a dead cert penalty in real time - thankfully VAR was able to give the ref a chance a look at another angle and it showed it was a dive. No way pre VAR that wouldn’t have been awarded a penalty.

Howard Webb and Michael Owen were reviewing the VAR decision for the Jota non-penalty and the VAR said something about “no complaints from the players”. Clearly they thought complaints on the field from players would be relevant in the decision making process. Nothing was said by Webb or Owen about this.

Maybe said in haste in the heat of the moment rather than have a blueprint rule on this ? either way, if it wasn't for VAR then Liverpool would have been awarded a penalty which never was.

That shows what a farce it all is.

And another instance of Var not being arsed. Why do we fucking bother.
Corruption in plain sight.
The ref gives a foul outside the area, tv shows its inside. Var don't bother. It's fucking bent

It’s not a farce that Jota would have been awarded that penalty by the officials without VAR ?
You keep bringing up the same incident.
One swallow doesn't make a summer.
If the refs were clamping down on " diving" they wouldn't even occur.

I would like more action taken against players that dive like he did - but surely it’s a good thing we have a VAR review for these dives and can correctly award the outcome ? Why leave it to a Ref who is unsure or has been conned.
You say ‘one swallow’ but I see week in, week out offside goals overturned, awarded pens overturned etc but of course they barely get a mention.

I bet he doesn't comment on last night's farce.

I feel VAR should have intervened (despite you being against it) to check if the foul on McAtee was inside the box. disappointing this was not done, however at 6-2 down i find it unlikely the dark forces would have purposely not checked because they were worried you might make a come back with 2 minutes to go - so i rule out corruption on this one.

It does not matter how long before full time this happened.it should have been checked properly. I would not rule out corruption at all!
I think the wum has spouted off but as he's on ignore I'm just guessing.

As we once saw with the rags Var even intervenes after the final whistle to ensure a penalty is awarded.
To blatantly ignore one with 2 minutes to go shows the officials are not doing there job.
If it was to protect their mate in the middle that's corruption.
If it's to avoid a tirade of abuse simikar to that which Madrid have thrown about for the last 2 weeks, that's also corrupt.
It's strange, the wum and his cohorts always mention how it's good for the game, citing various incidents and yet, when it takes 4 minutes to award a goal or blatantly refuse to award a penalty they say very little. The system is shit and the people using it are either corrupt or totally inept.

At least the TV director was actually showing replays to highlight it looked inside the box in the immediate aftermath.

I'm pretty sure UEFA instruct the host broadcaster not to show replays while VAR are checking incidents or not as was the case here.

I’ve not seen any television so no idea really. But seen this still on Twitter which looks like at least the initial contact was outside.

You've seen one still and want to offer a reason why they didn't award it !!
Those that saw it live and then saw several replays saw it was clearly inside the box. There is even, slight I accept, the possibility of a red as it was an elbow to the head. IF it had been considered deliberate, that's a red. These idiots looked at it so quickly it caught the commentary team of guard as they were also sure it was a penalty but play had restarted before they had realised the check was over.

Would you agree it's incompetence then .. because regardless of the score or whatever it's still a fucking foul and a penalty and possibly a red card too.

As I said, VAR should have intervened and awarded a penalty (if it was actually inside). either way ,I can’t excuse every single contentious decision, they will always happen and I’m not in the room with the officials.

Yes they will always happen. This is VAR. it's not supposed to happen.

5 refs is it now. All it needs is one of them to have bias and we get confusing decisions, like today, with full video evidence, so many people looking at it.

There was a 3.45 minute delay to Everton 2nd goal whilst they forensically looked for a reason to cancel that goal.

It hasn't improved the game. Just hasn't, nevermind it making it worse.

And even crappier than that is PGMOL will spin today's decision as VAR correcting a refs mistake in their insidious self promoting propaganda statistics..
