VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

This'll be fun...
Team A is awarded a corner when they put the ball out
Team B clear the corner break up field and score
Goal is disallowed because team A shouldn't have been given the corner

how many contentious corners are there really in a match ? 1 ..maybe 2 at max and it's f*cking infuriating when a ball has ricocheted off a player and the ref points for a goal kick. Good rule.
That will be at the officials discretion, they may think a lot are or may think none are

No, that won’t be happening. The proposal is that if the VAR can clearly see in a matter of seconds, without delaying the game, that a referee has made an error in awarding/ not awarding a corner, he’ll convey that to the referee, who’ll reverse his decision.

Once the ball is in play, there’s no going back

I actually suspect that this has been going on unofficially for some time anyway.

Adding corners to VAR checks

FFS games will take longer than the NFL at this rate.

Yellow card rule is ok but cannot the goal line tech just be extened conrer to corner rather than VAR replay for 10 mins

That's weird. Why check second yellow offences and not all yellow offences? If the first yellow was a clear error, then the second yellow wouldn't be a possible red, as it was really the first yellow. If you see what I mean .....

I’m sure you don’t really want every yellow card verified by VAR? Would be in for some long days.

Yes, you could get situations where the first yellow was ‘wrong’ and a correct second yellow still leads to a red. But however harsh a first yellow may have been, the player knows he’s on it and it’s up to him not to do something to earn a second one.

I’m not generally in favour of increasing VARs remit but it would be correcting a bit of an anomaly, where one of their current three specific jobs is to ensure red cards are administered correctly but they’re powerless to intervene in red cards as a result of two yellows.

But it's not a red card offence, it's a yellow card offence. I'm an accountant, I like consistency :)

And I'm not too keen on random rules to correct anomalies in other rules. I would prefer rules that make sense in the first place.

Seems like mission creep towards re-refereeing to me. But I suppose that bridge has been crossed already.

So if I have understood correctly, the referee can award a corner, in error, and if a goal is scored from the corner it can be reviewed and corrected even though the game has restarted with the taking of the corner. It has always been the case that once the game restarts a decision cannot be reversed.
Funny how this law comes in when we've started scoring from them in the CWC.

:)

I'll gladly take 2nd yellow checks although in our case it would just stop the ref from turning a blind eye to 'missing' 2nd yellows for opposing players.

OK, at the risk of replying to myself like a crazy person, I think it's only fair to say that this new offside thing has worked reasonably well at the CWC. You can't tell when it is working, of course, but there have been a couple of occasions, even in the City games, where the linesman has kept his flag down but then raised it after a couple of seconds. At first sight correctly. So credit where it's due. It seems to have been OK so far.

Still plenty of time for a cock-up, though :)
Worked with different technology than being used in PL and UEFA comps as it depends upon the Adidas patented technology using a sensor in the ball PL from coming season have switched from Nike to Puma I think UEFA are still with Nike

I get that, but I thought it worked pretty well at the CWC. No major cock-ups, at least. I don't agree with micro-offsides at all, tbh, but if they are going to do it, this seems to work pretty well. Better than the keep your flag down and we will check if it's a goal system, anyway.

Also makes a mockery of the PL SAOT (the most accurate in the world, remember?) and the UEFA SAOT.

Reviewing a second yellow - great idea. Imagine how many of ours will now be overturned compared to cartel cards. Why should the ref sitting on his backside in an office decide that the on field ref was too harsh in awarding a second yellow. On a matter of judgement, VAR should be no where near. We’ll be refereeing by committee next where a split decision will be decided by asking the audience. It’s a disaster waiting to happen and manna from heaven for conspiracy theorists.

Penalty rebounds to be scrapped for non-shootout penalties!!!!

So all penalties are now like in a shootout? Keeper makes a save or it hits the woodwork and the game just stops? Restart with a goal-kick?

WTF!

Are we still calling the sport "football", or are they going to change that too?

I agree “a lot” has been going on for sometime in those earpieces… it’s how they “manage” a game
