VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

Bet Fulham feel better now hey!!?

Michael Salisbury, the VAR for Chelsea v Fulham (and that call) has been stood down from today’s Liverpool v Arsenal fixture.

Watching on the box.
Haaland scores and they all appeal so I didn't celebrate. I thought it was a good goal but..... but now I fully expect a 5 minute var review.
That is how much var is fucking me off. The joy is going out the game.

I thought there’d be a check for our goal. Couldn’t and didn’t go bananas like we all used to. The one thing we live for - celebrating a goal. Killed by this fucking absolute shit

I'm sure Fulham FC feel much better now.

Going 1-0 up might have changed the outcome of the match. VAR decided to manipulate it their way instead.

What good does standing him down for one match do ?
Whether it's incompetence or worse, missing a match won't change anything.
Fulham were robbed against the rags by Var and robbed again v Chelsea but as they are a small team who really cares? What we need is Chelsea up there scrapping with the rags for top 4. Then sky and the advertisers are happy.

The dips match today.
Arsenal had a shot that took a clear deflection for a corner but the ref gave a goal kick. The players appealed the ref said no then put his finger to his earpiece before giving a corner.
There is no indication that the linesman spoke to him and said he was wrong so who did tell him ?
The 4th official ? I doubt it. He shouldn't be involved in decisions.
Var ? You have to think so even though they shouldn't be involved.

I know, I laughed as I typed it .

He should be stood down without pay for a month. That would concentrate his mind.

Same thing happened in our game with Reijnders header at the end. It hit their centre half and went out for a corner but the passive happy go lucky city players all shrugged their shoulders and walked away. Put some pressure on the refs FFS!

So here is Dale Johnson's take on the two decisions at Old Trafford:

"With the Premier League using a 5-centimetre tolerance level in offside decisions, the animation doesn't move directly in line with the players. That's because a player could be seen to be just ahead of the offside line, but be given onside.

The angle is of little use on a decision such as this because it was impossible to see how Foster was offside. What the technology deems to be the final decision will be used, even if the picture doesn't seem definitive."

Wtaf does that mean other than there is no evidence that he was offside at all. We just have to "trust the process" .....

And:

"The only question was whether Anthony was still grabbing Amad's shirt when he entered the area -- a holding offense is applied when it ends rather than when it starts. While the Burnley player and much of Amad's shirt was outside the area, his upper body was inside and that makes it a spot kick."

I may well be wrong but isn't the point of contact determinant in the awarding of a penalty, not the position of the attacker? Or has that changed?

They are literally making shit up. Their own rules state that they aren't allowed to re- referee decisions. The on field ref gave a goal kick, and the lino didn't indicate corner so it should have been a goal kick, regardless of the mistake. Although the correct decision was reached eventually, by their own rules the goal kick should have stood.

They are fucking rubbish/corrupt.*

Exactly. He'll be back earning big money prancing about on MoTD and others, being in the limelight, then he can make a totally fucking ludicrous decision again that will cost a lower Prem side and then just slink off the pitch afterwards not having to justify his decision to anyone. And still that arrogant bastard Webb will smirk his way through an interview and pay lip service to us who pay his wages.

It is utter madness that time and time again these officials are permitted to make the rules up as they go along and not be answerable to anyone. But if a manager dares to question that decision both he and the club he represents are punished.
There will be many managers, both past and present, that have at one time or another been on the receiving end of some of these farcical decisions that have cost their clubs immensely. And yet funnily enough we never hear from them. Even those that are no longer involved in the game. You'd think someone would have come forward by now to express their deep disgust at the way Webb -and his pgmol mates- have single-handedly helped the rags out over the years, and simultaneously caused some of the lower Prem sides to suffer points losses, or a lucrative place in the next round of cup games, but nope, not a word. Not a syllable of protest do we hear.

Why?
