VAR Discussion Thread | 2024/25

Regarding it being clear or obvious, I saw enough in it to agree with the penalty being given, Haaland was being held from behind and brought down. Haaland could have gotten a head to that if he wasn't brought down like that.

I think this is the problem, fans view incidents like this differently- I suspect if we’re being honest , had it been the other way around for that challenge and Madrid were awarded the penalty then there would be pages and pages saying it’s a disgrace, all corrupt , VAR has killed the game and where’s that ‘prick Bluehammer now ?’
Instead it’s all rather quiet when VAR played a big part in getting City the win.
No doubt Madrid fans on social media and their own forums will be having meltdowns today over that decision.

However, on replay that to me is a penalty, Ruddiger had no need to grapple him like that and bundle him down, the main thing is the Ref got the opportunity to see it from a different angle and deem it a penalty. That’s his sole decision whether some accept that or not. Well done by way, was a quality performance all round from City.

It was a good use of VAR there. Nice to see Erling put the Pen away as well. The trouble with Refs under VAR is they are defaulting to not making decisions, even if they see something. But regardless, they got it right in this case.

As for the incident in the 2nd minute, extremely close but I think they got it right denying him the penalty. The contact appeared to be just, and I mean just outside the box, like a hair. But I agreed with the decision of not giving a penalty there. Even though I despise VAR, I must admit, they got these decisions right.

Its fine for the refs to default into not making a decision and waiting for VAR, ive no probs as such with that as long as VAR then get it right.
But the problem is the introduction of the ‘clear and obvious error’ situation.
It leaves the decision grey again. The decision becomes Deciding whether the ref made a clear and obvious error rather than the offence itself

Give it a fucking rest will you for fucks sake. VAR did the job that it was intended to do (and in the way that the twats running the premier league choose not to).

City played a big part in getting City the win. Not VAR.

I take nothing away. City were brilliant, enjoyed the match alot. O Reilly is some player already, first time I’ve really seen Cherki - looks quality, Doku doesn’t get enough credit, all round class.

And that is precisely the problem with VAR.

Of course, a win at the Bernabeu is a big statement. But in the grand scheme of things, it's three points in the new CL format that we could have easily have picked up against Leverkusen. And it's three points RM don't get, but does anyone think they won't be in the pot for the last 16? No.

So yes, in a match that really doesn't matter that much, VAR did its job.

If it's 0-0 in the second leg of the CL semi final do you think VAR gives us that penalty for the rugby tackle on Haaland?

Me neither.

The world cup will now be split into 4 quarters allowing the greedy tv companies and FIFA to make even more money.
I wonder how long before 'and whilst they are checking Var we'll go to a quick ad break, we'll be right back'.

And of course until the advert has finished no announcement will be made.
Said all this about 8 years ago, during my 'Football Will Eat itself' rant .

It's control, manipulation of what should be a Free flowing game

It's now of course a business....and businesses need to be controlled checked quantified and open to corruption...

Imagine the electronic communication between betting companies and God knows who else....while non plussed viewers sip their tea or go for a wee..during The Var commercial break

And it is that Exactly.
A Commercial Break....millions and millions of pounds ,on the var Russian roulette.

How was Thiaw not sent off for Newcastle last night in the Leverkeusen match.
The commentators, 22 players and both managers had consigned themselves to it being a red card.
Newcastle were relieved it wasn't a penalty and just a free outside the box.

.........and the fact that there's any debate around whether it was a pen or not compared to one liverpool got the night before.

I do think the major difference between last night and the PL is the speed of the decisions.
Penalty? No, outside the box.
Penalty? Go and look. One replay and he’s given it.
Any reason to disallow City goal? 30 seconds later. No

Norwich player just scored with his hand, Saints players furious. Goal given.

There’s no way on earth fans would be ‘happier’ if VAR was scraped.

It was a stonewall penalty. The only controversy is that the referee who was looking right at it failed to give it immediately. VAR did its job. The referee didn’t.

I for one would be very happy and the majority of fans who sit near me in the ground feel the same way.
Var is awful..whether decisions go for or against us.its still shite.

You still don't get that fans won't be "happy" with or without VAR. Fans are never happy when a decision goes against them, VAR or no VAR. It's a passionate game of football not a legal case.

You want perfection, other people want the game played as it was intended. Give it up. Nothing is going to change people's minds.

For people watching at home I suppose it doesn't make a lot of difference. For people who pay their hard-earned to watch a game they (think) they understand and have an intensely personal relationship with, it's an absolute disaster, I imagine.

It’s true, it’s a pointless debate that goes round in circles- I point out a handball goal being given and no doubt later there will be a controversial incident where var have got the wrong decision and the arguments go on.
I don’t want perfection and I don’t expect that. I just want a ref to have a second look with tech help or goals like that one today to be rightly ruled out.

And it’s not a disaster if you’ve paid your hard earned money on travel, ticket, food and other costs to see your team robbed by the opposition player scoring a goal with his hand ? You may shrug it off and say that’s life - but it’s not the reality when we now have tech help that would have ruled that goal out - saints fans will be feeling sick and calling for Var.
