VAR Discussion Thread

Tolerance levels my balls

They’ve just said on MOTD that it would be disallowed in other leagues as he’s offside but thanks to the technology it’s the correct call here

You what

Just seen that Wirtz goal. It has to be offside surely. I didn't see it live, dud I miss something? Where was VAR ?
Just like the Newcastle winner against us. It's not that close they only have to look at the cut of the grass and in the City Newcastle game the six yard line.

Anybody still think PGMOL isn’t corrupt and plays to the PL directive?

Didn’t see the game but MotD have just tried to tell us that it was all kosher and that, as we are the only league who uses the 5cm rule (who knew), that they got it right.

Absolute bollox, but they want you to believe it.

Dermot being briefed to defend that dippers goal on Sky in the morning.
Apologist for the Pigmol. He will always back the Ref, remember this dick said that the foul on Foden at Newcastle wasn't a foul only for a couple of weeks later to say he's changed his mind, when pulled about a similar incident in which a penalty was given which he said was a penalty. He's a fraud and a liar, you need a good memory to be a liar.

I saw the Wirtz "goal" on the concourse before our kick off and you could see straight away it was offside. Them showing one of their cartoons to say it's onside, when the actual footage shows it isn't is an insult to people's intelligence. It's cheating in plain sight.

Thing is giving the likes of Liverpool the rags and Arsenal these decisions it be all nice and quiet from the media! Unlike when we get any sniff of a decision it’s talked about for weeks or years!
Fuck me God forbid we get a decision. Remember the supposed Rodri handball at Goodison Park, the ref actually gave an offside to City but they still go on about it to this day.

Football is a huge money making machine worldwide especially the premier league all this talk of the product and going back to scudamores comments it’s good for the league to have a competitive man utd says it all, manipulation of games and results are even easier now with the help of VAR..

From BBC Football

Wirtz looked offside. And he was - just. So why was his goal allowed to stand after a VAR review?

In the first two seasons of VAR there were some very confusing offside decisions. The lines drawn to the defender and the attacker would be on top of each other.

There were many complaints that this was against the spirit of the offside law.

So from the start of the 2021-22 season all leagues added a tolerance level, or benefit of the doubt, of about 5cm to the old offside technology. It meant that if the two lines touched, the player would be given onside regardless of the on-field decision.

This was because of inaccuracies in the technology, like the correct moment the ball has been passed.

In effect a player could now be marginally offside on the technology, but onside when the tolerance level was applied.

At the time, referees' body Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) estimated it could lead to an additional 20 goals a season.

The advent of semi-automated offside technology (SAOT) changed all that. Other leagues, including the top flights in Germany, Spain and Italy, have gone back to offside by the millimetre.

But when the Premier League introduced SAOT it wanted to continue with the tolerance level, to give some leeway to the attacker. That is because there are still questions about treating this new technology as flawless.

It is also why you will get situations like Wirtz, who appears to be just offside, but SAOT will give him the benefit of the doubt.

THIS PROVES THAT THE SAOT IS A LIE!!!

You what

This is what does my head in. Correct thanks to the technology? What sort of bullshit is that? How do we know the technology is correct? It's all just bollocks from people who have no idea what they are talking about. And I am done with it. Football isn't what it used to be.

Was that from Dale fucking Johnson? It sounds like him. No questioning of why a tolerance is needed, no questioning of why 5 cm, no questioning of how Wirtz was at least a foot (a literal foot) offside, no questioning of what the need for a tolerance says about the technology, no questioning of what it all means for every single close offside decision given in every UEFA or FIFA tournament, World Cup finals even.

The Dermot Gallagher of our national broadcaster. Hopeless.
