VAR Thread - 2021/22

So why aren’t the blue and green lines parallel to the white line of the goal area?
Perspective. This is really not difficult to understand. Explanation below as to the reasons why its not offside on an example for our own Jesus. Jesus goal given by the way, despite looking off in Pic 1&2 due to PERSPECTIVE, but shown was in fact onside on Pic 3 with Hawkeye technology which isnt affected by Perspective…

It’s corruption and the likes of sky and bt are losing money if City start pulling away from the pack, keep the league race alive and close and suddenly there’s a surge in subscriptions to both services, along with the premier league it’s a win win money, money, money …

Got a notion that VAR will be extremely influential in this season's title race as the corporate greed band wagon has to be fed more and more revenue from advertisers and subscribers. Unfortunately for us, Stretford Shitehawks and Littlewoods FC glory hunters are the dummies most likely to satiate that corporate greed. Pander to them and watch the money flood in.

Inconsistent, highly selective and tainted usage of VAR to influence and manipulate outcomes puts football in the same bracket as WWE. Anyone with a long enough memory will recognise us as the Mick McManus of the Premier League. There's far too many parasites attached to our beloved sport and those parasites will go along with anything that continues to help them pay their mortgages. I suspect the days are numbered when a game of football was decided purely by football...

I did my own measurement (the black line, not yellow :)

Not sure about the science behind it is any good but first I drew a line down the cut of the grass. I then did a line from the defenders boot to the vertical line. I then used the exact same line I drew from the defender and put it on Cavani's shoulder.

Cavani's line fell just short of reaching the vertical line though meaning he must have been further back and therefore onside. I initially though it proved the opposite when I posted it so I deleted the post when I realised it shown he was on. :)

Again I miss the transparency of when they used to show them measuring lines in real-time. I never had a problem toes meaning they were offside. Watching in 4K as soon as they put the 1st line down you could usually tell it whether it was on or off before they did the opposition player even when it was inches.

Watching a bit of Big Bash cricket this morning and they use frame by frame technology. Why can't this be used in football for offsides instead on guessing point of contact. Ref missed four big calls yesterday, foul on Foden edge on box, penalty or at very worse another foul on edge of box and two red cards for Southampton. VAR failed miserably on the three it could help with but because of no transparency we have no idea why unless of course we are reffed differently. What's that you say, I can't hear you.
I agree about the frame by frame technology, have thought this myself, think the reason is that it would highlight how much movement there is between frames in offside calls and how it’s not fit for purpose with the margin of error they currently use.

for the same reason that the goal-line isn't parallel to the six yard line or the line of the goal area when you see a screen shot on your TV, that's what everybody is saying. It's Perspective/Parallax Error.

It's simple. 50/50s the refs in our games don't award and wait for VAR to ref the incidents. Any doubt goes against us.
Dipper and United games 50/50s ( being generous) Refs givef them a and ref waits for VAR to sort out. That's how they avoid the ire of the fans. If we get the decisions via VAR then VAR is fckd (see Arsenal Game)
100% this.

Conveniently, this tactic employed by the refs ALSO allows them to escape from correctly punishing the defender who commits the "foul" (which is given as not a foul) against us.

Foul INSIDE the box = Penalty and just a yellow card (due to the double jeopardy rule)
Foul OUTSIDE the box = Free-Kick and red card for denying a clear goal-scoring opportunity.

The tactic is...

NO FOUL = VAR check for possible penalty which can ONLY give a penalty

VAR then decides if a "clear and obvious error" has been made by the referee, so the only outcome is either a pen (but only if it's clear and obvious) or no pen (any doubt) and then defender gets ZERO punishment.

Convenient, eh? ;)

The difficulties of adjusting for parralax. Good conclusion, btw, but two things:

You can't measure from the cut of the grass because your black line if placed at the point where the defenders foot is, would be at a slightly different angle which would place Cavani further back.

You can't measure a shoulder from a line on the floor, you would have to draw a line down to the ground first and then measure to that point. Due to the camera height and angle, in this case, this would place Cavani even further back.

He was well onside based on that frame. If it is the right frame, of course, is another discussion.
