Whilst i'll agree they are bad and have been since i've ever started watching

does there come a point where we say it's just to difficult for refs ? the speed of the game, the diving, the cheating, the crowd pressure, all decisions to be made in a split second

It really is a tough job without tech help.
Rugby union is a far more difficult game to referee with loads of technical infringements that can be committed far more discreetly than one on one tackles and obvious offside and they seem to manage and they are mic’d up so decisions are explained

Football seems to be a devilishly complicated game to officiate, referees and linesmen generally have my respect and sympathy. VAR was supposed to make their jobs easier, but I wonder what they actually think of it now?

Totally agree , so many grey marginal decisions that can never be agreed even when they check the monitor. Really don’t know the solution anymore

Fair enough, I don’t watch or know much about the rugby league

I do know they have players that seem to respect the refs decisions and fans that can mingle, have a beer and just enjoy the game rather than going nuts at everything

I think respect is the thing that is lacking in football. Players don’t respect officials and this is probably the main reason we are not allowed to hear what goes on on the pitch as the language is worse than on the match day forum. The sooner people like rat face for the rags and people like him get booked for constant whining the sooner the game can be cleaned up.

That's not a VAR issue. IF the PiGMOL really wanted to deal with dissent they could easily bring it up at their next referee's meeting and compel their match officials to apply the LotG as written:

WARNING (repeated or blatant offences should result in a caution or sending-off)
  • minor/low-level disagreement (by word or action) with a decision
CAUTION
  • dissent by word or action including:
    • throwing/kicking drinks bottles or other objects
    • action(s) which show(s) a clear lack of respect for the match official(s) e.g.sarcastic clapping
  • excessively/persistently gesturing for a red or yellow card
  • excessively showing the TV signal for a VAR ‘review’
  • gesturing or acting in a provocative or inflammatory manner
  • persistent unacceptable behaviour (including repeated warning offences)
  • showing a lack of respect for the game
SENDING OFF (Two cautionable offences, or:)
  • using offensive, insulting or abusive language and/or action(s)
A zero tolerance approach would sort the problem right out.

It’s not a VAR issue as such but referees seem scared of the players and therefore it affects their judgement. How McTominay and Van Dyke got away without a red card this weekend shows the refs are frightened to discipline certain teams players because it will be scrutinised and the slightest chance of it being slightly harsh the will be pilloried

The thing about infringements that can be committed discretely is that no-one can see them. In football, infringements are in open field, one on one mostly. In rugby, I have no idea how anyone sees what is going on at all. People have to accept referees' decisions because there are so many discrete infringements going on, in scrums for example, and nobody can see most of them anyway. Certainly not the spectators. Or maybe I just don't get the rules as well as I do in football.

Referee's have been mic'd up for a long time now. Swearing as an offence is easy to prove. The referee could ask VAR if the swearing was picked up on the microphone if there was any doubt that they'd just been called a c*nt. If a player or manager feels aggrieved at a sending off for swearing they could be sent a copy of the AV feed.

If you know what you are looking for good referees with help from the TMO don’t miss much whereas premier league referees are oblivious to things right in front of their eyes,it’s inexcusable. The laws of football are really quite straight forward really and it’s the implementation by said officials that is the problem

Agree.

But Sky and the Media will kick off because "It spoils the spectacle"

Personally I love games where it's 9 v 8 with defenders in goal.

Bird poo man told the ref to fuck off live on tv , where was the booking but they make stupid decisions elsewhere on the pitch
Ndidi told his own teammate to fuck off after a mix up and the cameras not only zoomed in but replayed it in slow motion.if players swear at the ref it should be an automatic yellow which never seems to be implemented.

Problem is is that it’d be carnage if every player that swore was sent off.

The refs would have to learn a fair few languages to be sure too!

I tend to agree that the refs do let too much go, dissent-wise, but to lower that bar would be chaotic. Maybe I’m wrong and players would stop after half a season of tons of red cards, but I doubt the PL want so many “spoiled” games.
