villa spend the money from barry

I know Boro were relegated last year but I liked how they tried to play god football. They were imo more deserving of staying up than some others. I like Southgate as a manager and I admired there effort to use a lot of young players to survive. The fact they didn't was down to 2 fatal and obvious flaws - couldn't score, couldn't defend (we've been there very recently but luckily with only one or the other of these fatal flaws at a time).

Anyway in all that I liked about Boro I've never seen Downing stand out. I've only watched a handful of games but not once has he done anything to make me feel like he was a top player. Contrast that with Barry, RSC, Tevez, Adebyor. All much more impressive - even if some are double the cost I think they are much better value for money. Happy days!

Let's not become like manure and slag everyone off who doesn't play for us
We're not slagging every player off, just a player who we think isnt that good.
They've spent £12m on a player who is injured and wont be fit til christmas at the earliest

took the words out of my mouth, 12m for him and if he was that good he'd be an england regular in our national sides weakest position!!

Regarding Young, I think he'll go to Spurs in a swap for Bentley. I'll make Spurs stronger and Villa weaker (especially if Downing's out till Christmas) but for some reason I think this month-old rumour has legs.

Gotta agree with NQT. Boro should have beat us at our place, Alves missed a load of chances, there only decent goalscorer was Tuncay and southgate played him in midfield!

Downing's a decent player - not spectacular, but good, and the kind of player Martin O'Neill seems to do really well at coaxing that extra level out of - will fit in with Villa's 'solid, dependable and English' ethic which they seem to be going for. They'll do well again this season, and good luck to them!

Its not very exciting though is it - maybe we've been horribly spoiled this window and have lost all perspective, but I can't help thinking they've had a big takeover at Villa and got a great young Manager in (I for one was extremely jealous of them at the time), but there's no sense of excitement around them at the moment - they ducked out of Europe with a whimper, their season petered out into a wet fart of abject disappointment, two of their biggest players (Barry and Laursen) have left, and there doesn't seem to be anything going on at their Club to get excited about so far this summer.

Still - what do I care - I'm a City fan, so I don't have to worry about the lack of activity at Villa and the predicament their fans find themselves in - not my problem!

It says elsewhere on here that AV are also planning to spend 6m on a top quality striker...by the name of Chedwick Evans...they obviously have big plans to challenge the Top 4.

Anyone know what price O'Neil has put on Young and how long he has on his contract?

Not sure about his contract but in the past the price has been rumoured to be around £25 million. I reckon he'd go for a bit less than that though

Villa Fan in peace!

The one thing Downing does is give Villa options. I personally think he will replace Barry in the centre. (remember Barry was playing LW before O'Neill made him into the CM he is now). I think he is quite similar ie good technically, good passer..and slow! lol I see it as a straight swap really.

Oh Ched Evans was a plant in our ITK section to fool a local journo.

Good luck for the season

Wow... just wow.

They spend all the money from Gazza on that overrated hack? Actually I can't really call him overrated, no one rates him except for MON it seems.

FMD.

What do you mean by hack? If it's a negative comment about him personally that's unfair as he's meant to be one of the good guys of the game.

I think he's a pretty average player though, and it adds further doubt that O'Neil is the amazing manager he's made out to be.

Still think Young might go to the rags myself

This.

Who else could be in for him though if Baconface is sincere about spending no more this summer? Dippers? Spuds? (would he even go there?) Can't see Madrid being interested anymore.

If Johnson went for £18m to dippers I can't see MoN accepting any less than £25m for Young.

He's a right footed LW so I think he'll just be switched to the RW position if they keep hold of him.

Excellent signing.

Oh and Young is valued at £ 30 Mill +. And only available to the current top4 according to MON. But we won't sell until next summer anyway. Partially because Downings injury and partially due to the WC and how the value can soar.

Average player Bart..

I disagree, but opinions are like arseholes.

I think he has terrific crosses, young, skill. Can fill the CM spot after Barry if we rotate formations. He created the third most chances in the league last season in a very shit team. Could do very well here.
