I know Boro were relegated last year but I liked how they tried to play god football. They were imo more deserving of staying up than some others. I like Southgate as a manager and I admired there effort to use a lot of young players to survive. The fact they didn't was down to 2 fatal and obvious flaws - couldn't score, couldn't defend (we've been there very recently but luckily with only one or the other of these fatal flaws at a time).
Anyway in all that I liked about Boro I've never seen Downing stand out. I've only watched a handful of games but not once has he done anything to make me feel like he was a top player. Contrast that with Barry, RSC, Tevez, Adebyor. All much more impressive - even if some are double the cost I think they are much better value for money. Happy days!
