Villa Vs City Post Match Thread

Considering we'd played on the Tuesday night, against one of the better sides in Europe and given everything, it wasn't that bad. If anything I thought Pellegrini should have changed a few more players to add more energy into the team.

On the other side, we've just gone through a period without Aguero/Silva. In that time we've got through to the quarter final of the League Cup (something United/Spurs/Arsenal/Chelsea couldn't do), we've qualified for the last 16 of the UCL and we're top of the league! We're going to add those two into the Christmas run, as well as Nasri, Clichy and a fully fit Delph!
this post exactly

One of those days unfortunately and on just about any other day one of the KDB and Sterling chances would have gone in.....just wish they had tried a couple of shots early on when it opened up to test Guznan. We lacked conviction in the last third, first half especially and were probably slightly unfortunate that it was Garde's first game so they were a bit more organised and gave it everything. Sterling needs to work on his left side as despite his excellent finish against Sevilla he still seems far too reluctant to go that way so hope that he and the coaches are working on it as it would make him a far more dangerous player. Bottom v. top, 7 successive losses or whatever, so yes perhaps we 'should' have won but the longer it went on and after the Fernando header I could see them nicking it so I'm taking the positives as best as I can

I wish Kolarov had just wellied that ball that came to him in the box right at the death. With a left foot like his, why not just knock the skin off it? He tried to place it, and I was screaming at him to hammer it in

I'm not doubting you're a blue but anything but a win and you throw your toys out.

We didn't win yesterday through lousy finishing. Any other day and it's a professional three nil.

True, I posted in anger more than anything and I'm prone to petulance, I admit.

Maybe I should take a few minutes before posting after a game where things don't go to plan!

A lot of what you say makes sense but no way can I accept a 'Tired team'. We had four full days to recover from the Sevilla game. How on earth do teams cope with Europa League combination of Thursday/ Sunday? Spurs didn't look particularly tired yesterday. I accept they were at home but they only had two full days to recover.

Fair enough, we can agree to disagree there, but I'll elaborate anyway...

We've just been through what I would deem an 'injury crisis.' The fact that we've been unable to freely rotate means that fatigue has been accumulating well before this week. So with this mind, if you take into account the occasion of the Sevilla match... the high adrenaline, the atmosphere, our high-energy playing style and the fact that mentally, we gave it everything we had too...

Time-difference, plane travel, then an away game later that week. It's hard work for the lads, even in spite of them being top physical specimens. For me, this has to be taken into consideration, even if we should've won anyway.

If the game had of been for 100 minutes we would have won easily and this thread would not be 100 pages long.

Spurs looked shot after 60 minutes yesterday.

the linesman gave the throw in to villa not city which is why play was restarted with a throw in, not a free kick

The ref gave City the throw. Sagna took it, and threw to Sterling who was in what would have been an offside position in normal play. The linesman flagged for offside as soon as Sterling gathered the ball in. The ref blew for it. Then when Sterling was questioning the decision the liner seemed to motion that Sagna's feet were off the ground. Replay showed they weren't. Quite how play got to be restarted with a Villa throw I'm not sure but it's pretty clear the original 'offence' given was offside.

The simple answer to all this is to play on until the referee says otherwise. Had Joe done so, N'zogbia would have been up on his feet and running around within seconds.

Correct but as a club and also with our players we do everything right and proper! Personally I'd like the players to be a bit more game Smart.

That was my view of it as well. The linesman cocked up and the ref saved him.

We seem to have the mindset that it doesn't matter if we have a slow start in prem games because we can blow anyone away in the 2nd half,it's a very bad habit we have had for a few years,i wonder if the Aguerooooooooo moment has given us that feeling that we will win in the end anyway
It's something we need to change,a fast start yesterday and an early goal and villa might have folded

I've watched the tape back and the linesman flagged it was a Villa throw in the 1st place before Sagna took the thrown in. The motion about feet was to advise the ref that the ball had deflected off a City player.

Well I didn't see that! Have to say that Sagna has a habit of throwing the ball a little late [downwards] which could be given as a foul throw. Anyway, you must be right. I was struggling to understand why officials didn't seem to know the offside law.

All the throw in stuff is irrelevant any way. We should have won, we didn't for whatever reason. It's the same old story in games like these. We just have to hope that one day the penny will drop and we don't assume we can coast through these kinds of games. Meanwhile, on to the next one.

I know what you mean but the ref shouldn't have blown for it

Without seeing it again I couldn't say but my recollection is the ref gave City the throw, whether the liner did or not. When the liner says 'Villa ball' and the ref says 'City ball' the ref wins. The gesture with the feet wouldn't have been to advise the ref, they would communicate via headsets for that, but may have been to show the player what the decision was for. If you have the tape to hand, watch the liner again after Sagna throws the ball to sterling. My recollection is, the liner flags for an offence when Sterling receives the ball - not when Sagna takes the throw or is about to take the throw.
