It's not mutually exclusive. VVD is already a leader and captain. He will come in and be a leader when paired with Stones, but he'll also learn a lot off a veteran like Vinny and improve himself further.

Stones will never be that type of defender, he's too graceful to be no nonsense, VVD is a hybrid of the two, which is what we need.

Being Left footed is important too. Pep mentioned playing Kolarov once because he liked that he was a lefty.

Yup, it's why I was frustrated re:Laporte but looks like that we are passing on him, I think pep has realised we lack physicality!

I'd be looking at the Bonucci end of the scale than say a Laporte or VVD, who are undoubtedly very good but I don't see having the leadership or experience to nurture Ota and Stones.

Otamendi is as old as Bonucci though, we need a leader, VvD can be that guy. He's as big as Vinny and also captain.

Vinny is just a sensational player and watching him just shows how far Stones has to go. Vinny is no worse with the ball at his feet than Stones and is an infinitely better defender.

For me....player of the year!;) I was one of those that had written him off earlier in the season but he came back fighting after the injuries and played a big part in the improvement at the back and was a big reason why we got the 3rd place finish!! Think we still need to bring in more help at CB but looking forward to seeing our captain leading the team next year....

Bonucci won't come, however, VVD has the potential to be an Ox, he'd have no better teacher than Vinny and would actually compliment stones!

I was surprised Redknapp mentioned him coming to us at the end of the game. I was surprised as I thought he was nailed on to Chelsea. So are we definitely in for him?
