Your argument is a bit of a silly one... Its one of those arguments that attempt to be right by making the bar of being wrong so unreachable. Even at his very best Kompany wasn't wonderful all season, our current best player Kevin won't be wonderful all season, nor would Dave or Aguero or Jesus....We certainly strengthened weaknesses, I never once said that full-backs and keeper weren't weaknesses but I still think Otamendi is a huge weakness unless he has Kompany next to him. I would love to be proven wrong and him be wonderful all season but I think over the season, if Kompany is back to having significant injury problems this is something that will probably come back to bite us, especially against top teams in the Prem and CL. I don't think it is a replacement for Kolarov we need, we need a replacement for Kompany and Otamendi needs to drop down one in the pecking order. We need a Van Dyke not a JFE. Although if it turns out that Kompany is fucked, we might need both in the non too distant. Just my opinion as always, I suspect you won't agree.
Yet your standard for determining you ate wrong is "if Otamendi can be wonderful all season." I mean really?
It is demonstrably false that Otamendi needs Kompany next to him. He's been good too many times without Kompany for anyone to believe that.
Otamendi is easy to describe... He is good most of the time, but every now and then he has an awful game. And it has nothing to do with who partners him.
So far so good. We are without Kompany and the team has been playing very well. On the issue of our defense... So far you've been wrong. We are conceding fewer chances now than we did at the end of last season, and considerably fewer goals.
So lets keep watching...
