Vincent Kompany

He started out as a Midfielder

No, he didn't. He was used mainly as a centre back and sometimes as a right back at Anderlecht. He only played in midfield a couple of times in an emergency

Anderlecht have again told Manchester United and other interested parties, that defender Vincent Kompany is not for sale.
The outstanding 17-year-old is seen by many as the best young defender in world football.

United, and most of Europe's elite, have been keeping tabs on Kompany since he broke into Les Mauves' first team at the beginning of this season.

Belgian press reports had suggested that United had come back in for Kompany in the last week and offered more than £10 million.

Anderlecht's new general manager Herman van Holsbeeck would not confirm or deny the reports, but stated that even if that bid had been lodged - then it would not be accepted.

"If that's the offer, I think he will stay," Van Holsbeeck said.

"He is only 17 and we are trying to have a new policy at Anderlecht, showing young players they can make a career here.

"If we sell Kompany after only six months, then that policy will look like nothing."

The revelation of the Belgian season has not been an attacker or a midfield player, but a 17-year-old central defender - RSC Anderlecht's Vincent Kompany.

The Belgian team played him in midfield a few times too but again this was more an emergency thing when they had nobody and because Kompany kept asking to play there. They stuck him on the right wing aswell but nobody is saying he should replace Navas

KOMPANY IS ONLY A MIDFIELDER ON COMPUTER GAMES. HE HAS NEVER CONSISTENTLY PLAYED THERE IN HIS CAREER.

I seem to recall he played CM for us when he first arrived and had read that he and de Jong were the CM pairing at Hamburg - albeit he was playing centre half for Belgium.

Hughes played him out of position at City when he first arrived because we had loads of centre backs and no decent defensive midfielders. He was a defender at Hamburg and Anderlecht.

This is one of those irritating myths that I have always put down to computer games as they always say he's this great midfielder. In reality he's played as much in midfield in his career as Zabaleta has and every three pages on the Zabaleta thread isn't a plea to put him back at centre mid.

Irritating? Really? Earlier in his career kompany played a fair amount as a CM - but it's quite clear that he has had the majority and the best phase of his career as centre half.

It's just what happened. I don't think that's cause for irritation. I also have no idea about the computer game reference as I've never played it.

He just needs to get his head out of his arse, stop the captain marvel shit and get back to being one of the best centre backs in the world

I didn't get why manual didn't put him in midfield yesterday instead of mdm

City on Kompany:

Multilingual and multi-talented, Vincent was runner-up in the Blues fans’ Player of the Season poll for 2008/09 then really came into his own in 2009/10, switching from midfield to his international position of centre-half with aplomb.

Equally at home as a central defender or defensive midfielder, the Belgian international regular joined City from Bundesliga side Hamburg SV in August 2008 for a fee of around £6million.

He was Mark Hughes' third signing and made a hugely impressive debut in August's 3-0 victory over West Ham United.

Before becoming a full international he represented his country at Under 17, 18 and 21 levels, and played at the Beijing Olympics.

Kompany began his professional career in his homeland with Anderlecht in the 2003/04 season and almost immediately attracted interest from across Europe for his composed performances in the Champions League.

He eventually moved to Germany and signed for Bundesliga giants Hamburg SV in 2006, but injuries restricted him to just 39 appearances.

His comfort in two positions proved to be a bonus for City as injuries and suspensions bit into the squad over a gruelling 2008-09 season. Playing with a toe injury for some of the time he was one of only five Blues players to start more than 30 Premier League games.

The toe problem became serious enough to warrant an operation in the summer of 2009, which forced Vincent out of the reckoning until the autumn. Despite this setback and the presence of several new signings, some outstanding performances in both midfield and central defence persuaded first Mark Hughes and then Roberto Mancini to make him a regular starter.

He has since gone on to become one of the world's very best defenders after playing an instrumental role as captain in City's title-winning campaign in 2011/12.

In 2011 and 2012, Vincent was named in the Premier League Team of the Year and he earned the Premier League Player of the Season award in 2012.

Vincent captained City to a second Premier League title in 2013/14 and was also a Capital One Cup winner as City beat Sunderland 3-1 at Wembley.

No, he really didn't. He played there on the odd occasion as about fifth choice. He is no more a midfielder than Wayne Rooney is because he played there once or twice.

The Metro is dead wrong.

The 20-year-old Anderlecht star is reportedly being lined up to replace HSV captain Daniel van Buyten, who is expected to join Bayern Munich this summer.

In der Defensive debütierte der belgische Abwehrmann Kompany und auch Atouba wurde noch rechtzeitig fit.

In 07-08, Hamburg had an injury crisis and played a variety of people in their midfield including Kompany, Jerome Boateng and a bunch of others which is where I imagine the confusion comes from. But he's not a midfielder and has never held down a midfield position as a regular in his entire career before City. In fact I'd wager that he's played double the games as a right back in his career than as a midfielder.

Yet nobody is suggesting every thread that we should move him over to the right back spot.

A pretty cursory search brings up articles from the bbc, goal, metro and other sites plus City summary directly referring to him as a midfielder as well as a defender.

I don't think there's a case for moving him to midfield, but more importantly, I'm not sufficiently concerned with the history of his career as a midfielder to debate this ad infinitum on the Internet, as that would be a bizarre way to spend a bank holiday!

If you worked in the complaints section in a call centre you wouldn't want damocles on the other end of the line that's for sure

Vincent's best position is centre half
He has been well below his standards this season
He should have been put into midfield yesterday when he came on

I hope he is back to his best at centre half next season

How about we move Vinny out to right back, Zaba into holding midfield and see does Yaya fancy staying on as a centre half?
