Is being captain too much for him?

Last season we were fantastic defensively, but this season we are all over the place. The stats don't look so bad because (a) we keep winning and (b) we don't let the opposition have the ball enough to create that many chances. But when they do, we always seem vulnerable. Last night was a prime example - every time we gave the ball away we looked in danger of conceding.

We have not been the same defensively ever since Vinny was made captain. I can't put it down to Lescott or our full backs because they don't seem to be much better or worse than they were last season. But Vinny was invincible last season and now he certainly is not. His fook up against Nanny in the Charity Shield was the start and he's been flaky since. He's made god knows how many mistakes - stray passes, slipping on his arse, getting sent off, and generally getting done where he never would have been before.

I would still say he's decent but last season he was immense, not "decent".

Do you think the pressure of being captain is too much for him? Or is this just a (prolonged) dip? We need him back to his imperious best.

I disagree, I think it's more down to the fact that Mancini has changed his style of football - a more attacking philosophy where last season Mancini was more concerned about being tighter at the back... This is also evident with the amount of Clean Sheets Joe Hart got.

The more attack minded we play the more likely we are to be open at the back.
I noticed how much we missed Vinny during the QPR game.

He'll adjust in time. He should be captain, he and de Jong are the most vocal players on the pitch (and big Joe of course), and he plays with a "lead by example" style of play.

His form has been average by his standards. Luckily Joleon has been outstanding this season so it hasn't made too much of an impact on the team as a whole. I've noticed Vinny has been a bit rash and has started trying to dive in for balls when opposition players have their back to goal and Vinny tries to sneak in front of the player with his foot whilst sliding in. His winning ther ball percentage of this tackle is very low. And this is something he hadn't done on a regular basis previous to this season, so i don't know where it's come from.

Also i don't know what boots he wears now but he's slipping over in every match!

You never know, with us being much more attacking this season there might be aspects to his game that aren't all that good yet (he is only young for a centre half captain of a top of the league team) and they are being exposed with our more open play. But there are aspects to his game that have improved too. He is even more vocal on the pitch than he was before too.

Go on Vinny lad, we all love ya!

Kompany is one of the top defenders in the English league, and even perhaps in Europe, his reading of the game and also his passing out from the back, composure on the ball are second to very few

Going forward we are very good, but if and when the opponent breaks up play and our full back have been pushed forward we are going to leak goals, the two central midfield player's are always trying to fill the gaps left by the full backs, but if the opponent can win the ball early and use it well they will always create chances, as good as our midfield is in that central area, we are not Barca, its not always the central midfielders who are at fault, losing the ball misplaced passes, sometimes the movement has to come from the front four,

I thought the tempo of our passing on Tuesday night was causing ourselves a lot of problems, not moving the ball quickly enough to break the opponent down,

Just my thoughts

i think Vinny is falling victim to a marauding right back. With Micah providing much needed width an pace down the right he's often left exposed at the back causing Vinny to move across and cover for him, it's the same with Lescott on the left.

Napoli are the only team (so far) to expose this but it's a bit of a catch 22 situation. Do we want to look like we're gonna score on every attack or do we want to go back to the laboured, lacklustre pace that we often set last season?

Vinny was captain in everything but name last season. Tevez may have tried to lead by example, but it doesn't help if you're captain of a multi-national team and can't speak anything but Spanish.

Komps is fluent in 5 languages and a naturally vocal player. I don't think that in his case wearing an armband makes one shred of difference.

As has been said on here, our style of play has changed and the full backs are playing further upfield. He is still putting some tremendous tackles in.
