"VINCENT KOMPANY has revealed a new tactic he can use to motivate his Manchester City team-mates — beating them with a stick.
The Belgium defender has inspired Roberto Mancini's side to a five-point lead at the top of the Premier League.
And, as City prepare to face Liverpool at Anfield on Sunday, the 25-year-old Brussels-born ace has made a video in which he tells how he flogged a pal 10 times with a lump of wood to make him run.
Rodyse Munienge, a Belgian amateur footballer who has played in this country for Clapton FC, speaks about Kompany — his friend since childhood.
He said: "About four years ago, Vincent and I went for a run in the woods. I couldn't run, and he started chasing me with a stick.
"He tried to hit me so I would go faster, but I just couldn't move forward. And he kept on hitting me with the stick."
Kompany explained: "It may seem cruel, but I can tell you that after 10 times he ran very, very well.
"And now he can run for two or three hours easily — and you have to thank the stick for that."
Kompany, City's £6million buy from Hamburg in 2008, makes his admission in a Nike ad called 'Leadership Goes Beyond The Pitch', to be shown on Belgian TV.
Team-mates and ex coaches line up in it to acclaim Kompany's leadership skills.
Albert Martens, his former youth team coach, said: "He was the leader, not only of his team but also of the younger and older teams. He was a leader from the start."

Vincent Kompany the man who should have been captain last season, sometimes it does seem to put extra pressure on your play but vinny is good enough to pull himself through these hiccups........wether its application or concentration in his playing at the moment he'll come good........
