Vinyl records.

To OP

I've failed to reply to your PM yet as I'm technically incompetent and need a dark place to read instructions, but as I'm being forced to tidy my collection up I'll see if there's anything going spare for free, but I'm not selling my good stuff.

I bought bulk from car boots and a local radio station in early 90s so there's a lot of Elkie Brooks and Beethoven in amongst the Husker Du and Ramones.

Being a Beatles fan from the early 60's (both the era and my age) my recent vinyl purchases have been the LP re-masters in stereo, and the 2 Live at the BBC sessions double album sets

Still waiting for the LP re-masters in mono to be released

I also bought all 4 of these sets on CD

I of course also have the original individual mono and stereo LP's and the original black box CD collection as well

The mono CD remasters are great imo

For years I listened to the Dr Ebbets remasters, until EMI did them erm properly , I don't see how they could be bettered.

How do the vinyl remasters compare ?

Have been very lazy over the last 6 months and just been using the Sonos with Spotify. Well, the sun is out, the garden's looking good, so I've decided to put some vinyl on. WOW, so much better than the Sonos (which does have it's place). Going through some old 80s 12" records right now, and if the wife goes out I might even put Unknown Pleasures on (however, the weather isn't really conducive to JD).

There is no real "best" format for listening to music, rather what suits your lifestyle.

For instance I spend a lot of time driving, and so a digital format such as CD or sd card is ideal, there were in car vinyl record players invented but they were bulky and quite silly from what I saw on telly!

I used to go to the gym and listen to my iphone with bluetooth headphones, again, no place for vinyl (and no one has nominated cassette tapes so far, not surprising as they were really pony compared).

I supply and run the PA for my mates' Ska/Reggae/Northern Soul night, and the vinyl is a pain to keep the sound balanced etc.., the DJ's who use CDs never cause any bother except when they play burnt ones, but the purists will insist the sound is better - to which I would say perhaps, if you weren't playing vinyl which can be knocking on 60 years old, and is scratched and worn from being played over and over again - vinyl deteriorates quickly, that is a real problem.

I sold my record collection last year to a lad at a car boot sale, who was re-buying his, as he'd flogged his, and was now regretting it - as soon as I did, I had a horrible sinking feeling, as I'd just got rid of my only memories from my teens and early twenties, and that is where vinyl is unbeatable, the artwork and lyrics, it all brings those days flooding back.

So, for me, tailor your formats to suit your lifestyle and mood, it's not a case of either/or, you can have it all if you want :)

Agreed, and for me it's vinyl. I enjoy picking out a record, dusting it off, making sure there is no shite on the stylus, then putting the record on - I love a little bit of crackle at the start as well.

I have an iPod, a CD player (fucking good one at that), and a Sonos. They all have their place, but my preference, especially on a sunny day is vinyl. Oh, and I certainly believe that I can 'hear' more on the vinyl, but that all depends on how good the production is, and whether the artist could be bothered (and how good your set up is)!

Hi mate

Sadly I haven't played them yet as my proper hi-fi is still in the house we have in Prague. I didn't bring it over with me when I came back.

I did bring my CD collection of over 1,000 but left my more than 1,000 LP's over there

I just bought a CD set up - Cambridge Audio CD & Amp and AE speakers to play the CD's on

Currently the plan is that we will go back to Prague when I retire, so I may have to wait over 4 years to hear them LOL
