Virgil van Dijk

He's 6 months into a new 6 year contract he signed in may, after only signing a five year deal when he signed in september just last year.

Therefore we can assume he is very well regarded and southampton knew that very soon clubs would come sniffing and probably built have some clauses built in his contract.
I think they bought him for about £13m.

He looks the part on the little I have seen of him but didn't he partner Denayer at Celtic? Maybe if Denayer had been bought by a club giving him regular starts and not chucked into the midfield of a defensive side managed by a complete fucking nupty, we'd be seeing him have a blinding few games and thinking why did we do letting him go?

As it is, from the BBC, "Denayer played just seven passes despite playing the full match in midfield, while Liverpool captain Jordan Henderson played 128".

Personally, i'd rather we get 2 new full backs.

Van Dijk took the utter piss out of the Scottish league, he would even dribble his way to the opponents box at times. He's a better defender than Denayer.

Being from Scotland, I seen a lot of Van Dijk and I genuinely did say that Southampton would be the perfect move for him, top 10 side, possibility of Europa league, that's his next step, I didn't think he was City level then but with what we bought during that time, he deserved a shot and now that he's done well with Southampton, I'm all for it, probably a ridiculous fee though.

Edit: To anyone objecting to potentially signing Van Dijk, I ask, Van Dijk or Kolarov?

why not just bring back Denayer? Didn't denayer win the SPL player of the year when he and Virgil played together for Celtic. For me that's an indication that Denayer is a better player.. at least potentially.. all Denayer needs is a consistent run in the team

Denayer won Young player of the year. Van Dijk was the main man though and offers what we are lacking, sheer dominant defender, who also can fit into what Pep wants. He's also very athletic and is probably quicker than all of our defenders.

Scores goals like Messi, too.

No brainer.
