Slightly different from the ever informative Russian invasion of Ukraine thread, but a discussion purely focusing on the Ukrainian president.

For me, he is the man of the 21st century. I see lots of comparisons with Churchill, but there is a level of bravery that far exceeds what was needed by Churchill. In February 2022, there looked little chance that his country could resist, I can't think of many leaders (if any) who would have hung around in Kyiv whilst the White House offering him a way out. The chances of Ukrainian resistance looked slim to none, and it looked as if he would be captured by the Russians.

I hope the present world treats him as kindly as the future no doubt will, but with utterly repulsive men in charge of all the most important countries in the world, he sits in an awful position really. His bravery, and ability to stay patient and polite in the most awful circumstances for him and his country is truly remarkable.

The true leader of the free world.

Dictator of the century ;) I just hope when all this is over he can stay safe, I’d suggest nit visiting Salisbury if you know what I mean.

Comedian, actor and puppet.
Even though plainly posted to provoke, it’s worth quoting this post, because two of those descriptions are entirely factual and therefore deserve commenting on.

To me, it’s truly remarkable that someone who was known professionally for much of his adult life for acting the clown was democratically elected into such a position, and that is before he had history thrust upon him, which has required him to act with more gravitas than previously in his role as President. It cannot be easy getting people to take you seriously to that extent, when your success has largely been based on people not taking you seriously. It takes a special kind of self belief, dedication and mental toughness to achieve that. It also requires someone with highly developed skills of persuasion. Trump may have called Zelensky the world’s greatest salesman in a pejorative sense, but how can that be a bad quality for a leader to posses? It’s surely one of the greatest qualities a nation’s leader can possess.

It’s clear that Putin has held him with contempt from the outset, and I wonder to what extent that was fuelled at that point by the fact that Zelensky used to perform for him, as he did, in that theatre in Moscow. It is telling about the Russian leader’s character that rather than admire him for such an achievement, he chose to view Zelensky very differently, talking about him in dismissive terms, in terms of his background, from the very start of his presidency. It’s difficult to escape the notion that this was, at least in part, fuelled by snobbery.

In fact that is where your post takes on a serendipitous relevance, because I expect the reason that Putin so despised Zelensky from the off was partly because of the fact that he used to be the first two words of your post, but also because he knew that the Ukrainian leader would never be the third and final word - at least not as far as he would be concerned. And that probably fed into his disdain at the first two words.

And I am also bound to wonder which of those three words gave people cause to like your post, and how much of it, as with Putin, was founded on a form of snobbery that someone has reinvented themselves in that way, and by any objective measure, as we stand here today, been manifestly successful in so doing.

Puppet like the rest of them, it's the name of the game. Will bend over to Blackrock, Goldman Sachs etc and Ukraine will become just another boring clone of every other country that's sold it's arse.

Wow if that's the free world I don't know where I'm living!

Lovely post.

Best bit for me:

Zelensky stopped off in Shannon and met Michael Martin, on his way over to Trump.

EU membership being expedited after a permanent peace deal and Irish troops as UN peacekeepers were discussed.
Pushing for EU membership is a top priority.

Also, interesting from an Irish perspective with The Taoiseach and Tanaiste heading over to the US for Paddy’s Day.
I hope they don’t lick Trump’s arse and press home the consistent message that Macron has started and hopefully Starmer will continue with, backing what Zelensky will no doubt emphasise to Trump.

Did Michael get the invite yet.
He might end up like a lot of the lads in Boston, having to sneak in overnight.

Great performance by a consummate actor. No way those issues were raised between them and thrashed out in front of the world's press without it all having been discussed and choreographed prior.

You’re surely not suggesting there will be a second act to this drama :)

To be honest, it wouldn’t surprise me, but at this stage I’m past caring. The deal never made sense without guarantees and without guarantees there is no deal and Putin would never accept guarantees to Ukraine anyway, so it was never going to bring peace or a ceasefire.

Europe are alone on this one and reckon we should accept this reality and act accordingly. Personally, I’m bored with the silly dramatics from Trump and the Americans. Either the US put up guarantees or they can fuck off - which I think were Zelensky’s final words.
