You’re right though. They should just enjoy the ride as long as it lasts.

Look I’m no huge Southgate fan. I get frustrated with him at times as much as anybody. He got the job on a temporary basis to steady the ship after the Allardyce fiasco. His qualifications were pretty much that he wasn’t going to bring them any more unwanted controversy. I’m sure he was viewed as a stop gap at the time but his results left them with no option but to offer it him permanently.

But I am a fan of being fair. And despite his lack of club management success and his natural negative tendencies, he has to be judged like everyone else on results. We’ll have more to go off in two weeks time. But at the moment his record in major tournaments is: semi, final, and eased through the group as winners. People can harp all they like about the standard of the opposition but to quote the most annoying new cliche, it’s a results based business.

It means we’ll be in a group with a team that normally knocks us out in QF or semi stage.

What makes me laugh is if England gets knocked out by France & Southgate loses his job. Next bloke comes in & fails to qualify due to being in a tough group, they’ll rave about Southgates record but he’s made it harder.

UEFA have 16 slots for the next World Cup. However they decide to organise the qualifying tournament, it’ll be a big ask for any half decent team to fuck up getting there.

I genuinely haven't heard a single England fan seriously claim were going to win it. Its normally just bollocks welsh and Scottish fans come out with as that's all they have. Its like united fans banging on about empty seats or being state owned, just empty words to have a cheap dig.
