The OP hasn't put me off in any way. Ticket checks, passport, searches etc. I'm expecting all this stuff. Sevilla was quite strict but I didn't feel mistreated. Most Blues I know will find the pubs and drink until they have to make the match.

They use pepper spray on any gathering they don't like the look of. Many years ago I went to see a concert at the Trocadero in Paris and the concert was cancelled for health and safety reasons at the very last minute. So the artist concerned came out and started his performance on the pavement which, naturally, drew a crowd of happy people. A couple of songs in and the local police rolled a tear gas canister into the crowd successfully dispersing it. And we were the only English people there. The moral of the tale being don't take it personally when you stagger around blinded and gagging. It's the French for you.
