Was Ian Bowyer The Edin Dzeko Of 1970?

Okay, so Daniel Sturridge was an unused substitute when Chelsea beat Bayern Munich and Colin Barrett was the odd man out when Forest beat Malmo and Hamburg.

So how many players from Manchester City’s Academy have played in a European Cup/Champions League Final?

Who scored City’s first goal at Old Trafford in the famous 1970 League Cup Semi-Final?

Who played in Vienna, but was then hounded out of Maine Road by the boo boys?

Who was quoted in 1973 whilst playing for Orient:
“My ambition is to score at Maine Road and then flick two fingers at all those fans who gave me such a hard time whilst I was playing for the club”

What was the problem?

Perhaps our older fans could enlighten me

I believe the comparison with Dzeko might be wrong though as I believe Bowyer took far more flack than he ever has?

I seem to remember lots of groans when we saw Bowyer's name on the team sheet because it meant that one of our favourite five forwards was missing - Summerbee, Bell, Lee, Young and Coleman.

The problem - then and now - was that we had an element in the fan base that were miserable moaning fuckers who got on players backs at the slightest mistake. Once Bowyer left, Joe Corrigan became the target and there's usually been one poor sod copping it in every squad as long as I've been watching City. Contrary to popular myth, they weren't all in the Maine Stand either, there were plenty in the Kippax.

As I recall Ian Bowyer had a spell in 69-70 when he was keeping Nellie Young out of the team. I think Nellie had an injury and then a subsequent loss of form. Although Bowyer was a trier and worked hard he didn't have the skill to match the likes of Buzzer, Bell, Lee etc. hence, as you say, he became the target for a section of fans who didn't rate him and wanted Nellie back. You are correct in that some of these were in the Kippax - certainly in the part where I used to stand. After Bowyer left he became twice the player he had been at City - notably when he played for Forest. I remember him and Peter Withe taking us apart at the City Ground the season they came back up to the old first division.

It's a strange trait of our support that down the years we have had a regular downer on home grown players.

He scored a spectacular header in a one of his early games which was shown on MOTD. It was possibly the worst thing that he could do as it created unrealistic expectations.

Everton at home, 1-0 early season as I recall. You are right - Big Mal built him up as the next best thing to sliced bread.

Spot on! There was a section of the crowd at city in those days that were horrendous. Some actually booed our own players when their names were read out prior to the match and every time they touched the ball after. Poor Big Joe got stick no matter how he played, it took him years to win the boo boys over. I seem to remember the Main Stand being especially bad for this but it could have come from other areas too.

I'd be a bit miffed if Edin left City and went on to win the league and 2 Champions Leagues with another English club.
