Isn't 'Notts' used when referring to the county of Nottinghamshire, like Yorks, Lincs?
No wonder they moaned as they're not Nottinghamshire Forest. Man is an obvious abbreviation of Manchester, even our airport is known as 'MAN' internationally.
 
On the other hand, there is a Notts County and it is their correct name. So that's where the confusion might come from.

We are just City. Eastlands is just "the stadium". Birmingham, Norwich, Coventry, all get called by their place names. We are City. Super City. From Maine Road.
