Not all doom and gloom but the CSKA result has made our task a lot more harder to qualify for the next phase.

we can still finish on 11 points, albeit with some hard work to do, which is pretty decent in the champs league groups isnt it?

We can find out in our next game. We do the business at home v CSKA and keep an eye on Bayern v Roma, us and Bayern win the groups in our hands. We beat Roma and whatever happens v Bayern at home will be a bonus.

We're playing in the toughest group with Bayern Munich who are either the best or 2nd best side in Europe. Too much arrogance amongst City fans who think we just have to turn up to win. No this is the toughest competition. We have to raise our game

Annoying me the amount of City fans who take this competition for granted and want to throw the towel in. We've waited a lifetime for these European nights like this and we're prepared to give it up so easily?

We're extremely fortunate the way the group fixtures have fallen.

I would expect Bayern to finish the job in style v Roma at home to secure group winners.

It would leave them on 12 points. They know they can afford to send a scratch team to us because we can only reach 11 points.

Roma would only be able to get ten points with wins v us and in Moscow.

I would expect us to beat both Moscow and Bayern = eight points.

And would not be in the least bit surprised if Roma dropped points in Moscow.

Meaning it would be already over in Rome, barring a hammering of mammoth proportions.

The Bayern game is the one.

Yep but we have to win our remaining 3 games with Roma away the final game. What makes me a bit more optimistic is the Bayern result.

See some people mentioning tonight's trashing of Rome as a good thing, as it gives City an advantage goal difference-wise. The format of the game has goal difference as the 6th tie-breaker. This is the 6 top tie-breakers as copied from Wikipedia.

1. higher number of points obtained in the group matches played among the teams in question;
2. superior goal difference from the group matches played among the teams in question;
3. higher number of goals scored in the group matches played among the teams in question;
4. higher number of goals scored away from home in the group matches played among the teams in question;
5. If, after applying criteria 1 to 4 to several teams, two teams still have an equal ranking, criteria 1 to 4 are reapplied exclusively to the matches between the two teams in question to determine their final rankings. If this procedure does not lead to a decision, criteria 6 to 8 apply;
6. superior goal difference from all group matches played;

So if City and Roma tie on points total after all matches, the first tie breaker is points between City and Roma. City and Roma each have 1 point, so City must win or draw in Rome. If it's a draw, it is decided by superior goal difference (tb 2). Goal difference will be equal (draw), as will tie breaker number 3. To win on tie-breaker 4, City must draw 2-2, giving City 1 more away goal. If it ends 1-1, then we go on to total goal difference. If it ends 0-0, City are out.

*crosses fingers for no errors*

Be interesting to see if we can actually win a game that matters in this comp.

You expect us to beat Bayern? That's bonkers. Bayern don't have a challenger in the Bundesliga. I don't think they will take their foot off the pedal this time. Not after our recent games against them

However I'm thinking we win the other two and we will go through. But what City fan could expect us to do that? Nothing seems to be easy or straightforward for City in Europe. If we can mess it up we will find a way

Yes because of their record in other competitions. They've got character

Seen lots of comments from City fans saying they're not bothered about Europe. They wouldn't say that if we won a home game.

Even if we beat Bayern at home we would have to avoid defeat against Roma to qualify if they draw in Moscow assuming we beat CSKA.

We could have a better goal difference on 8 points and still go under given the stupid rules in the Chumps League with regards to teams that finish on equal points in respect of who goes through.

That hopefully will change in years to come or better still have a one off game at a neutral ground to decide who goes through.
